Flags, Diamonds & Statues Vol. 9-1 has an article on the DL&W Improvements in East Orange NJ.

It's available at www.anthraciterailroads.org under the FD&S tab.

Are you sure about the location? 9th and Indiana is a couple blocks south of the tracks. Did you mean 9th and Ontario? Aerial shots seem to show grade crossings of Tioga and Venango Streets, which are north of Ontario, but that's all I can see. I thought that the whole line was grade-separated, but ...

I was looking at Septa's website to see if I could find more info about the garage, but didn't see the capital plan info that used to be there. Is it supposed to be built south of the current station? If so, I wonder if anyone has looked into locating a garage in-between the R3 and R5 lines, which w...

At least two *more* were sitting on trucks in Weccacoe St. at 12:30p today. I saw a total of four shells, two were inside the fence, one of which was being lowered onto shop trucks on the transfer table. The other one was still on the trailer. I'll try and post pix tonight, since I can't plug my cam...

There's not a lot to see, but you might be able to talk your way past the guards at the truck gate. There's a 10 ft berm covered with all kinds of funky weeds that blocks most of your view of the yard, which is only two tracks, some asphalt and some overhead lighting. I'll see if I can get a photo o...

The line has been completely separated from Septa as of last year. So, you have two single-track railroads running next to each other from Newtown Jct. to Cheltenham Jct. CSX passing tracks are located at West Falls and up near Byberry Road, so it seems like you'll see 2-3 frieghts running in the sa...

Greenwich Yard belongs to CSX. The Mustin Intermodal Terminal (NS) is just south of that, on ex-Navy Yard property. It consists of two tracks that have never seen an intermodal train and are currently used for storing covered hoppers. I don't know how you can 'expand' a service that's never been use...

You need an appointment to view the archives, and they aren't available until January 2010 at the earliest due to some building renovations. The new contact person is Bradley Smith [brasmith@state.pa.us]. The last time I went, they only had hours on Tue-Thursday. This may be reduced further now. Goo...

The City Archives have some great photos of the bridge replacement over Tabor Rd. in 1950. It also shows some of the local industries, such as ABC Coal and Kelly& Meehan Lumber, who were customers of the Reading. I think the RDG also had a few team tracks on Tabor just north of the bridge. Go to...

The LV and CNJ started combining their PA operations in the mid 60's, since the traffic levels were dropping and could not support the maintenance on two parallel lines. When the LV started using CNJ's A-town yard, they closed Richards and most of Florence Yards. Lehighton Yard also was downsized an...

I saw it this morning outbound on the R2 at Willow Grove around 0715. It was the first car of a 4-car train, and the full Pennsylvania lettering was visibile. From what I understand, Septa pop-riveted stainless panels over the lettering of the PRR and RDG cars. Is that what happened, or did I hear i...

Here's a thought- why not add a suffix to each line endpoint, such as R2-A Warminster and R2-B Newark and keep the color codes. Then, install computer kiosks in each CC station, similar to those used for airline check-ins. These would have a station listing. Type in the first three letters of your d...

The yard closed when the Budd plant did, which was at least 2 years ago. They moved production to a plant in Michigan. I *think* Tastykake is getting served from West Falls at the moment, although a replacement for the Hunting Park plant is being constructed in South Phila on the NW portion of the N...
