SEPTA's Railroad Network (circa 1979, The Pawson Files)

Another snapshot from Delaware Valley Rails by John R. Pawson. What is most fascinating about this writeup on the Rergional Rail network is how very little has changed in 31 years. While other transit agencies in the northeast have truly redefined themselves since Conrail washed their hands of the m...

Thank you, one and all, for your interest in the Warminster Line, which long was a backwater line. Thanks, too, for the generous complements. John - both you and Matthew Mitchell are an endless source of facts, history and credibility concerning an agency such as SEPTA which continues to boggle our...

Regardless how far back the double track was cut back near Roslyn, 2900 feet isnt going to prevent any additional trains from being run on the line. While it may not prevent such service, it has the potential to make it more difficult--it cuts about two minutes out of the window you have to schedul...

Since my name is in this topic's title, I reserve the right to make some extended comments on the accumulated posts lately  . 1.Why is SEPTA contracting RRD? Is it just possible that so much fixed plant elaboration (such as fancier stations) is being/has been done that maintenance costs are v...

But I digress on one particular issue that many have accused SEPTA of. Quite often, rail folk like myself have been heard to moan "SEPTA management has no idea how to operate a traditional commuter railroad." Instead, I think management does not want to operate it as a commuter railway in...

NJT is guilty of this, particularly on the MOM project. However, they also dealt with it and did not let the NIMBY issue stop the RiverLINE. Interesting...

Matt - is this part still true today?
"It is governed by a board consisting of two members each appointed by Philadelphia and Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties, plus a representative of the governor." Is it still two members or has that number changed since 1979?

Shame that the below forum was locked so quickly by our overzealous moderators http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=73584&start=0 . An organization like SEPTA bears closer examination at a public forum level. The below quote is from John Pawson's Delaware Valley Rails: the Rai...

I am sorry to report that PennDOT removed the four lane grade crossing on Rt. 29 this past Monday (7/12/10). The rails were cut on each end, the crossing with rubber mats lifted (now sitting under the PA turnpike overpass) and the crossing filled in with asphalt. Below is the "before" shot...

John Pawson, circa 1979: "As viewed on a Conrail map, the ex-RDG Bethlehem Branch would seem to be a useful north-south connection route. However, the line crosses the region's northeast-southwest topography with the benefit of few stream valleys. As a result, the branch has a saw-tooth profile...

How shameful that the politicians in PA roll over and play dead while SEPTA signs away rights to a double tracked main line, a double tracked electrified line to Ivy Ridge, and a suburban commuter line in the middle of Bucks County. To think, once upon a time SEPTA served Allentown. Now we're hangi...

Paco, your feelings about DVARP is shared by me and everyone I worked with at Septa. Thank you, BuddSilverliner269. I am ashamed to have that opinion, because at one time, DVARP really was a powerhouse. They called a spade a spade, commended SEPTA on their good projects, but called them out on the ...

And I wouldn't take the trail leases as part of some larger plan--each of them makes sense in its own context, and I think it's coincidental that they were all done around the same time. Coincidental? Matt, you're kidding me, right? How naive. They all "make sense" because a politician wi...
