Maybe, maybe not......

We all can remember when 2 dollars a gallong was shocking a little over 5 years ago. Now two bucks is cheap..... They're gradually brainwashing the public.

EXTENDED RARITAN VALLEY LINE SERVICE TO START OCT. 28

Passing tracks create greater travel flexibility including earlier and later service to and from High Bridge
September 28, 2007
Contact: Joe Dee (973) 491-7078

NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT will add service between Raritan and High Bridge starting October 28 by extending eight trains—four in each direction. The additional service is made possible with the completion of a new passing track near White House Station that allows for bi-directional train traffic west of Raritan Station.

Raritan Valley Line customers will benefit from earlier morning peak-period service originating in High Bridge and later evening service west of Raritan. The first eastbound train will operate nearly an hour earlier than current service, and the last westbound train will operate about two hours later than it does today. New mid-day service between Raritan and High Bridge will give customers greater weekday travel flexibility.

“This extended service will provide flexibility to existing and new customers who can rely on NJ Transit for convenient early-morning, midday and after-work public transportation options,” said NJ Transit Executive Director Richard Sarles.

The extended eastbound service includes two trains operating in the morning peak period and two trains during midday hours. The extended westbound service includes two midday trains and two trains operating after the evening peak period. There is no weekend service west of Raritan Station.

“We in Hunterdon County will benefit from the additional level of service that NJ Transit will be providing,” said Hunterdon County Freeholder George D. Muller. “This helps Hunterdon residents make environmentally friendly travel decisions for work and recreation.”

All extended trains will be renumbered into the 5700-series on new timetables, and existing 5700-series trains will have new departure times. Customers are encouraged to check timetables carefully for these changes and other minor schedule adjustments. Also, customers who have signed up for My Transit, NJ Transit’s system for sending up-to-the-minute travel information to cell phones and other electronic devices, are reminded to update their account preferences to reflect the new train numbers.

Nice! Thanks for posting that!

October seems to be a big time for changes. October 2004 saw a massive increase in Bergen Line weekday service, now there are two stations opening and new trains on two different lines. That should take care of any "car surplus," no?

I noted on the way home on 5709 today some work vehicles parked at Whitehouse and both Cush and Tunk's relay huts had signal masts, etc. piled on the ground near them. So looks like end of October is doable.

Will the passing siding be in use effective 10/28? Seems to me that it won't based on the new trains being added.

With the new trains, 5721 will turn as 5738 and 5725 will turn as 5742. Nothing that would require the siding to be used immediately.

Not that the siding would make a difference, but what is the reason why NJT won't extend any trains to High Bridge on the weekend?? Not enough ridership is the excuse?

Might 5706, 5714 and the current trains need to use the passing siding to meet trains coming up from Raritan Yard? Presently they meet just east of High Bridge, but that may no longer be viable with 6 morning trains.

Nice, it is a step in the right direction. Now, hopefully the ridership will come on these and new folks will be attracted to using the line with the increased service.

Its interesting to note that 5421 (soon to be 5721, turning as 5738) is a seven car set. I think there is only one seven car set on the RVL.

The seven car set usually ends up on 5709 in the evening, but currently, 5438 goes into the MMC. Currently, 5440 (with the seven cars) turns for 5709 in Hudson Yard. Interesting to see if they will send 5440 into the MMC to swap equipment in order to get the seven cars. Or they just might change the assignments all together, so another crew besides 5440's gets 5709. Stay tuned...

There already is a current 5706 with a 846am departure from high bridge.

I hope they sit down and think this thru. A eastbound 5706 departing before 5700?.

5406 should become 5700. 5700 to 5702, 5414 to 5704, 5702 to 5706, 5706 to 5708, 5438 to 5710, 5442 to 5712 and 5710 to 5714.

5421 to 5703, 5425 to 5705, 5705 to 5707, 5707 to 5709, 5907 to 5711, 5711 to 5713, 5713 to 5715. 5451 to 5715, 5715 to 5717 and 5457 to 5719.

just my two cents

I believe NJT has already determined to do what you suggest. One of NJT's releases I read says that they are going to renumber the trains when the actual timetable is released to the public in a couple of weeks. This info was an advance notice to indicate which existing trains were affected, so a person could look at the current timetable and see what will happen.

I noted from 5709 last night that at least a couple of signals were erected, with the heads pointed to side for the time being.

That makes sense... I guess... if a passenger really likes his/her crew and doesn't want to lose them.

In the fine print, NJT notes that existing train schedules, not just numbers will be changed. It will be a whole new ballgame.
