The RVL is very essential to keep on schedule - many meets are either at the west side of Aldene on RVL (if things are running well, trains usually pass in Cranford), inbetween High and Hunter on the NEC, and inbetween Somerville and Raritan.

One train being late in any one of these places will most times make another train late as well. An eastbound train late coming off the Lehigh (for whatever reason) will make the westbound waiting at High late. Then that delayed westbound train might make the eastbound waiting at Cranford/Aldene late as well. Conrail very rarely holds westbound trains on the LL for an eastbound to come up the ramp, usually its the other way around. A train late leaving Raritan yard will hold the westbound up from going into the yard, a late westboudn yarding might hold an eastbound from leaving.

Even though the RVL is double track, its almost run like a single track railroad. The meets are in locations where they can adversely affect other trains. Throw in single tracking anywhere in there, and there goes the schedule..........some padding is necessary in someplaces so conections aren't blown on a constant basis (eastbound at least)

It looks like the weekend of October 20/21 will be the cutover of the new CUSH/TUNK signals and switches with the ROC. The may call a test extra Saturday or Sunday to run up and down from BRAD to ARCH a few times to shake the bugs out.

One week before huh? Seems like that is cutting it pretty close to me to complete the project.

Any reason why NJT doesn't extend any weekend trains west of Raritan? Seems they could extend already existing trains west and have them turn in High Bridge..are the numbers that low? will it come eventually?

Drove by today. Didn't see any trains when I was there. All of the signals in and around Whitehouse were illuminated and crews stationed at each of the bungalows doing testing/work. On the siding, I saw the signals at Tunk go from Stop to Medium Clear (or would it be Slow Clear?)for about a minute then back to stop. Seems like they are just about ready to go.

the speed on the siding is 45mph, so it SHOULD end up displaying a limited clear, allowing 45mph while crossing over.

The siding is technically in service, was put in 1201am Saturday - tomorrow the first revenue trains will actually be going past the sight, and dealing with the new signals.

Is there enough time to turn at High Bridge rather than Raritan without adding trains and crews?

45 MPH huh? Seems plenty fast for that siding.

Probably. They're already killing the crews with the weekday changes. No new assignments. Just longer ones with no breaks. :(

could the whole weekend thing work with running a select few trains (say two AM eastbound and two PM westbound) from White House to NWK/HOB? I know the issue about the numbers and the crews and equipment, but isn't this the most densly populated area along the stretch from North Branch to High Bridge? Think of it:

Train, say, 5508 and 5512 makes stops:
White House
North Branch
Raritan
Somerville
Bridgewater
Bound Brook
Dunellen
Plainfield
Netherwood
Fanwood
Westfield
Cranford
Roselle Park
Union
Newark Penn Station

Then 5539 and 5541 run the other direction. just an idea i guess, thoughts?

No breaks with potential resultant fatigue could increase the chances of a personal injury accident to crew members or passengers. Hopefully, they could strike a reasonable balance between cost and benefits.

Yes, but Annandale has the advantage of attracting drivers from I-78, unlike Whitehouse, and High Bridge can draw from north on Highway 31. Weekend service on the RVL from High Bridge might even increase weekday monthly pass ridership from Hackettstown since the pass would be usable from High Bridge on weekends, not all that far away.

Does anyone know if any new sets will have to be used to cover some assignments once the trains are extended to High Bridge? Or will they just use the existing 7-8 trainsets that currently cover the line?

Currently, there are 9 trainsets at Raritan. And no more are needed for the upcoming schedule change. Once they work it out with Conrail (if ever) for the additional service, talk was that they would add one more set. By additional service, I mean adding more trains overall. Not just extending existing trains to High Bridge, which is what will happen next week.
