They were "destroyed" of their original rears when NJT converted them from steam generator to HEP and put the angled rad flares to match the flared engine radiators. the only piece that is original is the marker lights!
Out of curiosity.....is that the same time the second control stand was removed? I remember they were still running long-hood forward on NJCL trains in the early '80's......
I believe so, but im not certain....a lil before my time :) If not then tho, it was when they were rebuilt by Juniata in 1991.

Probably a tough a question, but does anyone know what the number of the first rebuild was that returned to service in 1991??? I tried looking through photos and I saw rebuilt 4103 in November of 1991, but don't know it was the first to return!

Thanks!

It's somewhere on this site. As I recall, it was the only CNJ unit not renumbered. If that is true, just get a list of the original and rebilt numbers and you can figure it out.

Then that would be the 4101...Thanks!

The ones that came back with dual control stands were renumbered 4100-4105. The singles were 4106-4112. I remember the "new" 4110 coming back before the "old" one left; for a couple of days there were two 4110's on the property.

Weren't some (if not all) of these units converted to HEP (with original rear carbody ends) well before the 1991 rebuilding. IIRC mid-late 80s, some
were running out of Hoboken w/C1 sets.

Yes, some were converted to HEP in 1985-86.. I don't have the numbers that were converted first though.

Regarding those converted to HEP in the mid/late 80's were their rear ends (or LHF's) chopped/reframed then or early 90's?
My question (in other words) - did any original CNJ carbody units possess HEP capabilities?

For this M&E excursion to PA in August my preference would be to use the ex-CNJ units entirely or with mix them with that red M&E Alco.

I was under the impression that the original HEP conversions used a Cummins on a skid without flared radiators (like VRE's ex-B&O GP39's)...when they were replaced by the CAT 3406's the frames were modified with flared radiators....can anyone check me on this?

The original instruction manuals they issued was for operation of a Cummins engine in the rear of the units. There was pictures on the old blue comet site that had these with mufflers on the rear of the old CNJ bodies with the cummins engine inside and HEP plugs. If you want to try and find photos elsewhere of them since blue comet is down just look for ones with red recepticals on the pilots.
