Ulster County lawmakers approve removal of tracks to create Ashokan trail
By Patricia R. Doxsey, Daily Freeman
POSTED: 11/15/17, 6:34 AM EST

KINGSTON, N.Y. >> Ulster County lawmakers have taken a giant step forward toward creating a recreational trail along the Ashokan Reservoir, approving a series of resolutions authorizing removal of railroad tracks there.

The Legislature on Tuesday approved entering into a $943,000 contract with Taylor-Montgomery LLC for removal of roughly 11.5 miles of rail, hardware and railroad ties.

Lawmakers also authorized the county increasing its contract with the architectural firm Barton & Loguidice by $118,000 — to $668,000 — to design and oversee construction of a multiuse, recreational trail on an 11.6-mile segment of the former Ulster & Delaware Railroad corridor between Basin Road in West Hurley and state Route 28A in Boiceville.

Funding for the two contracts will come from a $2 million New York City Department of Environmental Protection grant given to the county for the trail project.

The resolutions were approved in 18-6 votes. Voting against the measures were Legislators Mary Wawro, C-Saugerties, Ronald Lapp, R-Accord, Dean Fabiano, R-Saugerties, John Parete, D-Boiceville, David Donaldson, D-Kingston, and Manna Jo Greene, D-Rosendale...

We had 6,468 customers in Kingston this year for October, compared to 6,632 last year (both ends) and 6,573 for 2015 (again both ends). Essentially we were able to bring most of our Phoenicia leaf customers to Kingston. However, to keep them we need to add more track, which will be our key goal for 2018.

Ernie: I rode the Polar Express on Saturday, November 18 with my son and two grandkids, ages 10 and 6. We all had a great time. As I have come to expect with the CMTRR crew it was a well run and professional event. The current western terminus in in Hurley at about MP 6.5. Is it possible that you can extend the operation beyond that. Again my thanks for a great day.

Ulster County Legislature votes unanimously to advance plan for linear park in Kingston
By Patricia R. Doxsey, Daily Freeman

POSTED: 12/19/17, 10:28 PM EST |

The Legislature voted unanimously to bond $165,000 for design and engineering work to convert a stretch of the county-owned railroad corridor between Cornell Street and the Kingston Plaza in the city into a Midtown linear park. Legislator Tracey Bartels, a nonenrolled voter from Gardiner who caucuses with the Democrats, was absent from the meeting.

Supporters said the conversion of the now-unused former Ulster & Delaware tracks into a walkway will create not only a recreational trail, but also provide a safe route for people who don’t have vehicles to reach Kingston’s major supermarket, Hannaford, which is in the plaza.

“The creation of a clean, safe, multiuse path through Kingston for nonmotorized transportation and recreation is an asset a thousand times more desirable than the usused remants in the corridor of a railroad whose time has come and gone,” said Nick Mercurio, a Rosendale resident who used to live in the city...

And I would imagine there will be more, given the drug epidemic that's running rampant almost everywhere these days.

"Sure, let's build more rail-trails", politicians say. To me, that just gives drug dealers a spot to sell their drugs, a
place for junkies to buy them and a place for them to pass out and/or die from an overdose.

Sorry if that sounds cold and crude, but it's reality. :(
