So in one weekend over 1,000 paying passengers rode the train. Sounds like that should be trumpeted loud and long, as the economic impact to the area certainly would have been noticeable. Would a hiking trail have attracted that number of visitors? I doubt it.

That doesn't matter because the railroad operation does not fit in with the county government's program.

The next election is a long way off. It was a close election last time around, but tying your fortunes to a single candidate is a long-shot. Mike Hein used to support CMRR and applied for TIGER grants to rebuild the railroad before Kathy Nolan and her cronies paid him off to block any progress.

LETTER: Extending tourist railroad makes perfect sense

POSTED: 08/04/17, 9:22 AM EDT

Dear Editor:

It makes perfect sense to me to support the Catskill Mountain Railroad’s proposal to extend rail operations to the Glenford Dike at the Ashokan Reservoir. There are magnificent views here, making it a logical destination for the railroad. Historic research indicates this area originally was designed to accommodate both the railroad and a pedestrian trail.

The new trail easement with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection allows for the tracks to remain. Extending rail operations 1 mile from Basin Road through West Hurley to the Glenford Dike is mutually beneficial for rail and trail supporters. Hikers and cyclists could take the train from Kingston to the Ashokan Trail, avoid the long uphill stretch along state Route 28, and be ready to enjoy the flat rail trail. Train riders would have a scenic destination and eventually the opportunity to experience a reservoir sunset on a dinner train!

This rail extension to the Glenford Dike would be a great move for tourism in Ulster County. I wholeheartedly support it.

Meg Carey
