Re: Reactivating the Mountain Division?

I just got back from a trip to North Conway via Rt 113 along the Mountain Division. A few observations... The line never goes through Bridgton. It stops at Bridgton Jct. where it met with the narrow gauge. Besides Poland Spring I noticed at least one major lumber yard right next to the tracks (in Ea...

I still don't quite understand this North Conway vs Freeport formulation. Perhaps you have access to economic data that states otherwise, but it seems to me that people come to Freeport for the ocean and the shopping and to NC for the mountains and the shopping. Two completely different packages. I ...

The argument makes sense from a Maine point of view, but I don't see how bringing Montreal tourism to N. Conway would directly effect Freeport. In fact if (and its a big "if") NH ever got their act together it wouldn't be too hard to bring a passenger train all the way through N.Conway on ...

Since both routes to Montreal would have to travel through NH, has NHDOT had any say in the matter? I know they own at least the notch portion of the Mountain Division, and wouldn't it make more sense for them to route through North Conway for Canadian tourist dollars now that Berlin is out of Busin...

I thought the latest news was that NHDOT IS looking into passenger service to Manchester...

This does clear up the mystery of the aptly named "Portland trolley Park" outside Portland Maine. Its pretty much just a forest preserve now, but I always passed the sign hoping it was some sort of trolley museum (we have a few of those in Maine).

The most obvious fantasy route in my mind would be to connect the gaps in the non-Amtrak commuter network in the Northeast corridor to make a complete regional rail trip from Maine to Virginia possible. Starting with Maine Eastern we could go from Rockland to Brunswick transfer to Downeaster to Bost...
