"layoff track" at bethlehem,pa mp 88 and the "pocket" at the bottom of the hump in allentown are two i can think of.......
IIRC,We lost about 6 jobs right away when the steel closed in the mid 1990's at Allentown(xn). I was working the phila pools (XN to S. phila)at the time and it even caused a slow down there as we had fewer road trips with the loss of ZBB's.
sad but true.....youll see many more items getting cut up to make those asian cars we americans love to buy.
The reading kept 5 T-1s around in the 1960's for rambles and parts. 4 still survive, one is for sale.

Those F40's were known as " tin cans "on Amtrak. They were crappy riding units with no power,real dogs. Once we had one bounce so bad it hit the cat wires leaving phila on the broadway limited,nice flaming spark. Later it had a" pinion support bearing alarm" go off at thorndale ,...

The blue binders were handed out on thier own, we had to 'build' the books at rules class and add to them when the timetables came out.
the outer station project ,when they printed the reading railroad magazine,did a great issue on those a few months back.
don't forget ,people have to come in contact with those locomotives. when your away from home(working the road) and cannot carry a complete change of clothes, a cleaner loco is desired. its not just how they "look" to the general public.
Well put COEN77,RR life is a different beast altogether. Your just telling it like it is ,not being negative. the facts are the facts!
you said it,100k jobs are alot harder to come by than a RR job.
