Re: SEPTA Should Ditch Catenary For Third Rail

Can a 3rd rail system, handle the super high voltage AC current that is used on the RRD? And, no I am not advocating a switch. Im just curious. If so, we think it's dangerous to cross P&W tracks at 700 volts. Imagine an energized 16,000 volt 3rd rail. OUCH ! SIZZLE!!!

It's good to know that there was actually a subway in the works for Arch St, but I don't think that Phila would've needed a subway loop in CC. In my fantasy map, Arch St would've been owned by PRR (not PTC), to rival the MFL in CC. The Arch St subway would've been nothing more than a branch of the ...

Okay, so it is a real picture of a real refurbished ex-KC car. Now, I want to know is it on the roster for rt. 15, or was it a prototype for the subsequent PCCII's. Where is this car now if it is not on the roster. Plus does anyone know if the PCCII ever ran in the subway either in revenue, fan trip...

Is that an actual photo, or a computer render?

It's close to what I have seen by riding the line. The "yard" north of Erie, was a planned flyover for Germantown Ave service. The layover stubs in the chart are actually "upstairs". One thing that is missing is the jogover that occurs in the vicinity of snyder.

Red Arrow.... Your probably right about that. The silver and gold both were a metallic foil paint. This is one of the reasons that the gold got so dirty, the paint sort of absorbed the grime, and after time washing it no longer made the car look clean. They probably did not use this silver paint on ...

Also, Septa had two experimental schemes on the city side. One was Yellow, marroon belt and white roof. The other was Bel-Air blue, and a white roof. Both of these cars stayed in these schemes until retirement. Good article but you have one little thing wrong. The banana car (2168) was Gulf Oil'ed ...

I will add my two cents to this discussion. At the main library in Philadelphia there used to be a great picture book named Twenty Colorful Years which showcased all SEPTAs transit liveries. I don't remember if it included pics of the post private Bluebirds and MP54s. Anyway, hers the lowdown on wha...

That's a regulation on any heavy rail operation. Any bypassing train must slow down to approach speed within station limits. Besides, unless they are single tracking on 3 Track (the southbound runner between Lombard-South and Pattison) they'll have to slow down anyway. WRONG, PATCO express trains p...

Back in the late 80s and early 90s I had a girlfriend who lived in Narberth. When I would I visit her, sometimes I would go by using the R5 instead of driving.... On my return trip to Bryn Mawr, at around 10 or 11 oclock in the evening, I would often see a deadhead move eastbound of about 10 to 12 c...

Of these, I think PA2 offers the most benefit. Still, the city shoudl be looking at a subway to the Northeast first. Idk cant really say to much on that because this is PATCO's plan. Although PATCO has no intentions on building north... Their charter does allow them to build anywhere in the city.

The same lunacy has come to Philly. People have to endure these insipid announcements. This is not public service. It is a social service. Whose idea is it? I hope it fails. What is wrong with putting in nice good crispy sounding speakers, and a good quality mic in the cab and letting the operator ...

I remember back in the years stradding the 80s and 90s, while the N5s were on order, there was a model of the N5 prototype on display in 69th street.... The model had a pantograph...
