Third Avenue Elevated

Shame the city couldn't hold on to the Els back then as they would have been a huge boon to the city now.

They were unsightly and dilapidated. The removal of the El on Third in Manhattan created an economic revival.

The El could have been refurbished. Certainly would have helped alleviate the IRT Lexington Ave crowding.

The Third Avenue elevated in Manhattan was a nuisance. Its demolition caused property values to soar.

From what I've heard on here, the el was in very poor condition, particularly in the Bronx. The fact that the Bronx portion was the last remaining in service points to its need, even today. But no one is going to build an elevated these days. If SAS is ever extended to the Bronx, it would likely connect to the Concourse line.

Don't forget the Els were very noisy. While the sound of Lo-V motors taking on power might be "music" to the ears of a railfan (like myself), it would be significant disturbance/annoyance to office workers.
