Re: Amfleet Disposition Discussion Thread

An Amfleet would be much more appealing for a ride from, say, NYP to Montauk than LIRR's normal rolling stock. But it's hard for me to see them lasting much longer in mainline service so I'd expect to see a few scattered about going to private owners like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7bMg...

Does working for the FRA as a Safety Inspector after a 25 year RR career count towards the 30 years for RRB?

Or does it simply not break the connection? How would working for FRA affect your RRB?

Was the building originally 4 floors? I read somewhere that the current 2nd floor was added sometime around 1950-55. The main waiting room had a very high ceiling.

I think it's unfortunate that they didn't go with the MN arrangement, as at Woodlawn, where an arrow is always displayed: vertical for Harlem, horizontal pointing to the right for New Haven, thus always displaying a positive indication one way or the other. At Harold, it seems that if the route is ...

Agreed, If it meets the minimum candlepower 200,000/400,000 it would be fine to roll, Likely there are specs as to how many segments are powerful enough. Flickering would likely be another story. I would expect that FRA requirements are around specific lux levels. However, a manufacturer would only ...

May also be that express trains are less demanding on the equipment because of the longer running times. Less starting, braking, door operation, etc. All this takes a toll on equipment, that in this case is already old.

Continual running is not as abusive, think highway miles on cars.

SCM stands for Simplified Cam Magnetic. The basic idea is similar to earlier GE MCM (Motorized Cam Magnetic) and "PC" (Pneumatic Cam) controls, with the cam moved by a single motor, instead of paired electric motors or pneumatic cylinders. SCM was also used in Chicago on 2000, 2200 and 24...

This is a question for the old hats that worked in the car shops. DC Propulsion cars were (for the most part) either GE or Westinghouse. DC traction motors with series-parallel switching and a cam driven controller & resistor grids. Specifically GEs system. They called the 1960's onward systems ...

1. What's the 'big deal' of having this valve that makes it so repugnant to LIRR? 2. Outside of 3rd rail shoe types, what other significant differences between MN and LIRR's latest cars? As I recall, MN's can handle multiple voltages, or is that only for CAT equipped? 1) Essentially, maintenance of...

I always found interesting that all 338 MNCR M7 cars were delivered on their own wheels - and the LIRR M7 cars were shipped on flatcars from Bombardier - Why was there a delivery difference to MNCR and the LIRR? The difference between the MNR & LI M7s is the air brake setup. The LI M7s do not h...

Usually one year to apply for new positions within the MTA.

Please do understand that the MTA HQ jobs are NOT RR retirement, you will no longer be in the RRB system.

Official rule? Seriously? There is a rule about non conforming equipment not being allowed to run without the direct permission from the General Superintendent Of Transportation. The GST is not going to allow a steam locomotive to operate in any zone on LIRR property without the ok from the LIRR Pr...
