the state of florida has no income tax, but you pay out the a$$ for everything else.. a candy bar costs almost $2.. the police are out to collect revenue in any way possible.. but at least they have some commuter rail and this HSR link.. georgia decided to elect morons and they took the "no build" option for the last 10 years and look at that place now!!!

Couldn't agree more on GA. It's not so much they elected idiots; it's rural GA against Atlanta. Rural GA could not care less about transit, and don't realize impact ATL has on rest of state. The situation in FL is very different; lots of metro areas, good opportunity for point to point transit.

Actually, if you add up ALL taxes, most states are at relative parity.

Some states don't have one of them, but have to raise the others to compensate. NH has no sales tax, but high property tax, for example.
California hits you with a sales tax near 10%, but has lower taxes in other areas (hard to believe, I know), but very high fees (car registration, for example).

Just for the record, NH has no sales tax AND no income tax AND our property taxes are now lower than our neighbors to the south (MA) for similarly priced homes.
What NH doesn't have is a lot of the spending that other states have. VERY little bus service, NO rail service that we actually pay for (no subsidy for the Downeaster stops in NH) and lots of other services that people moving here from other states are surprised to find missing.
Not wanting to start a political commentary - just pointing out that there's more to the discussion. This is why the "Capitol Corridor" (yeah I know, someone else is using it already but that's what they want to call it here) extension of commuter rail to Concord NH from Lowell MA won't happen soon - no bucks to pay for it.
The feds said that Boston to Montreal was a designated HSR corridor. The line should go through Lowell and then up through NH's "Big three" (Nashua, Manchester, Concord) before heading northwest to Lebanon/White River Jct, then Montpelier and Burlington before going to Montreal. The right-of-ways are there (even if the track was ripped up in places long ago). The riderships studies were done, all looks good. Just no $$$. Because of that, Boston-Montreal service might take the shape of Boston-Springfield and then northward or Boston-Albany before turning north.
Vermont has no trouble ponying up money for rail but NH balks.
To try and keep this on-topic, it's a very similar situation where a lot of people might be on board for improvements (MA, VT, ME) but some aren't (NH).
