Nearly 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the Hackensack River this weekend after a parked locomotive sprang a leak.

State environmental officials say the spill caused an oil slick that spread along the east bank of the river in Ridgefield Park for at least 2,000 feet.

The Nov. 27, 2005 Sunday Star-Ledger also carried this story.

See http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/jersey/in ... xml&coll=1.

NJ-ARP was surprised that the newspaper coverage didn't include critics of the railroad industry, such as the Hackensack Riverkeeper, which/who has been expressly hostile to freight rail operations in and near the Meadowlands. Perhaps the paper's deadline was too pressing.

During a long holiday weekend, official spokespersons are generally very difficult to locate.

Railtrailbiker has a point; it was a holiday weekend.

However, in all immodesty, the print media have little if any trouble finding NJ-ARP for comment, regardless of the day or weekend.

Though it's always risky to use oneself as a barometer, NJ-ARP would dare not assume it alone is available for comment on weekend and/or holiday periods.

Moreover, good (and even lazy!) journalists just love controversy, and if one can legitimately obtain such from a known critic or foe of any protagonist, one might find such without too much effort. That critic, in turn, might want an "open shot" at his target.

But perhaps we over-evaluate and -- as Railtrailbiker notes -- perhaps it all can be chalked up to the holiday weekend. If so, a missed opportunity for the Hackensack Riverkeeper.
