It's good news VIA is refurbishing and repainting old F40s.
Does anyone know how many F40s VIA owns, and how many are being refurbished?

I have found this http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/sing ... tract.html
...Will see Global Railway Industries subsidiary CAD Railway Industries strip all the 20-year old locos and rebuild them to meet current efficiency, environmental and safety standards. Work on the first locos is underway, and they should re-enter service between March 2009 and the end of 2012.

And have found this http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopi ... 59&t=47309 dated January 2008
Via's active locomotive roster = 21 P42DCs and 54 F40PH-2s.

Does anyone know if these numbers are correct?

Additionally, Canadian $101.5 Million for 54 locomotives averages out to Canadian $1.88 Million per locomotive, much cheaper than paying American $5 Million per brand new locomotive. I consider that a great deal........

http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&q=cach ... GcpopkbQiA

VRE is paying American $60.58. Million for 12 Motive Power Xpress locomotives.

For the P42 DC,they have 21 in all,for the F40PH2
They should have 54 in all,but two of these are no more in service
The 6430,forget about it,nothing to do with it!

Also the 6450 are not in use for the moment,I don't know if this one will be back..

And for the rebuilts, the 6417 have just been completed.

VIA rostered a total of 59 F40s. To date, five have been written off in accidents: 6422, 6423, 6430, 6447, and 6450.

The next F40 that will be released after 6417 will be 6433.

Thanks for the information. With 52 F40 locomotives to refurbish, at what rate are they getting done? March 2009 to December 2102 is 46 months. They need to average around 1.2 locomotives per month.
Do you think they will finish this project on time?

Well, 6402 was put out for testing at the end of April this year. The next rebuild, 6452, left the shops in July. From July to November, they have now put out 6452, 6457, 6454, 6443, and 6417. So that's roughly 1 per month in the July to Nov. period, which is what's important seeing as 6402 underwent extensive testing before they continue with the subsequent rebuilds. Since the first few were done, the rate of completion seems to have increased, so it seems probable CAD will be able to complete the project on time. However, as we all know, deadlines never seem to be realistically met.

While I am, like many, excited to see the locomotives all rebuilt, I'm also somewhat sad to see the old F40 look disappearing. Over the next year, seeing an F40 in yellow-face will become much less common. And in 3 years time, they will be no more. We'd best get out and get the shots we can while they're still there!

I made a new web page for the updates of the "rebuilts" project!

Add another one to the list:

#6444 is in service:

Of course on a more sour note, 6400 and 6457 were just involved in the Train 15 derailment yesterday, and are likely to need some work (especially 6400, which is now likely to get rebuilt up to the likes of the later units).

I heard that the engine 6433 is now out of CAD! But, I don't have pictures! If you have some pictures of the 6433, you can send me at this email adress...

N.B. Now, we have 10 confirmed rebuilts on service for VIA!

I've read 2 of those 10 locomotives, 6400 and 6457, were involved with the Ocean train derailment last week. So only 8 rebuilds are operational now.
