From Trains.com Bow-and-arrow trainjacker suspect charged RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - The man accused of using a bow and arrow in an attempt to steal a Union Pacific freight train Oct. 9 was charged on Wednesday with carjacking, assaulting police officers and grand theft, according to a story in the ...

I love trains, and I believe in passenger rail, but I believe we would all be better off to scrap the no-hoper services, and spend the money saved on improving and upgrading the services that actually do have a prayer - like the NEC. Why not keep subsidizing the long distance trains. Why do they ha...

I've actually never known how to evaluate the railroad land grants. On the one hand, as Col P implies, they were a fabulous giveaway. On the other, they could not have been developed without the railroad's presence. However, the Great Northern's success (without landgrants) and the NP's troubles (w...

I think the NEC should be government supported but by the states, not Fed. It's unfair that California pays for 403(b) trains like the San Diegans (Pacific Surfliners), San Joaquins, and Capitols. So far as I know, San Diegans were NEVER 403(b) service. Pacific Surfliners (lineal descendants) may b...

Here is a topic that always upsets me. Railroads do not want to hit autos at grade crossings, and it is obviously the motorists' fault, but I have actuallty heard of some railroads losing lawsuits from this! Who sues who? I went to a crossing safety seminar for UP some years back. One of the points...

I think the NEC should be government supported but by the states, not Fed. It's unfair that California pays for 403(b) trains like the San Diegans (Pacific Surfliners), San Joaquins, and Capitols. My point is this - California operates over more track miles than the NEC yet CA is expected to pay for...

I filled out that tedious employment app online last night and checked it this morning just for the heck of it. To my dismay, it said "thank you", not even "Application being reviewed". I have been railroading for about 2 years, so perhaps they are looking for more experienced a...

May I respectfully suggest that you're being a bit of an alarmist to draw such a massive, sweeping conclusion from BNSF's leaving the old semaphores intact on the Raton route? It may not be too alarmist. Amtrak, in its Strategic Plan FY05-09 on Page A-31 http://www.amtrak.com/pdf/strategic05.pdf li...

Anyone know what kind of time frame UP will give you between the hiring session and a potential classroom start date? I know it will vary, but what is your knowledge of it? Thanks! I was given 3 weeks notice, and that was pending a succesful completion of my Physical Ability, Drug Screen, Physical ...

You must wait 6 months to reapply if you took the written test.

You can be assigned anywhere within your hub. So for example, if you hired out for Roseville CA Hub, you could be assigned (wherever your seniority could take you) from Elko, NV to Oakland, CA - Southern Oregon to Bakersfield or San Luis Obispo. Pretty big area and even if you hired for one location...
