The Metrorail Gold Line and Blue line normally operate with two "trolleys" in tandem, all operated by one person. The streetcar lines in the metropolitan Los Angeles area are growing and becoming more and more a necessity. When Angels Flight starts running again, all will be back to norma...

FWIW: The Feb. 1886 Official Guide shows the DL&W (schedule effective Jan. 11, 1886) running through to Buffalo with stations at Dansville, Mount Morris, Roch. & Pitts. Junc., and East Buffalo. The BR&P schedule effective Jan. 4, 1886, shows the same crossing of the DL&W as D. L. &am...

when you say Tracks 2 and 3 not installed until 1992 you must mean the inner 2 express tracks from Erie to Olney. There were 4 tracks Walnut-Locust to Erie for as long as I can remember, and that's since the late 1960's, I assume they were there decades before that. I can't find a source handy, but...

Recently I saw from the below link that the Acela Express trainsets started to raise front pans instead of rear pans. Is there any reason why it happens? http://naphotos.nerail.org/show/?order=byrail&page=1&key=Amtrak%2FAcela%20Express I live along the NEC, and all the Acelas I see have alw...

One reason to electrify the Cumberland Valley bridge would be to allow an alternate exit from Enola for electric trains, via the Main Line and the Royalton branch to Shocks Mill. I'm not sure if the dates check out, but could the electrification date from 1972 (I think) when flooding from Hurricane...

I do volunteer work at the NRHS National Library, and we have received the following inquiry: "Looking for info on location of FM locomotive serial or batch/order numbers. Where is the number located on the frame?" Almost the entire NRHS collection is now in temporary storage while we sear...

Re: 1982 RDC wreck details?

Electric rail equipment is better at shunting track circuits because the ground or neutral side of the traction power circuit passes from the wheel to the rail, which is then bonded to the transformer at the substation. The substantial amount of current drawn by a train or trolley is enough to obli...

The Erie-Lackawanna ferry used to go from Hoboken terminal to Barclay Street in Manhattan. Now, NY Waterway runs from Hoboken to Battery Park Financial and also to Wall Street. In earlier days there were ferries to Christopher St. and 23rd St. in addition to Barclay St. (that was when 23rd St. had ...

I have to jump in here and second CarterB's recommendation to take the Zephyr westbound rather than eastbound. Westbound, you leave Denver around breakfast time (I don't have a timetable handy) and ascend the Front Range of the Rockies during the morning, emerging from the west end of the Moffat Tun...

The PRR C. T. 1000 of May 1, 1945 shows the Iron Hill station at milepost 41.3. For reference, it is bracketed by the Newark station at 38.6 and the Elkton station at 44.7 (in case mileposts have been adjusted since then). Wilmington station was at 26.6. I can't relate this to nearby roads, but it m...

We cannot fault USRA. They did a great job of building a "railroad", not another "conglomerate". They even avoided monopolies by introducing competition like D&H. With PC, they had three really complicated predecessors (NYC, NH, PR) and they did an unbelievable job of cuttin...

Yes, at the time it was complicated; but looking back not so much. Conrail only "wanted" rail-related assets, but only those related to their business mission. (Their mission decreed by government/FRA) As the best example of what happened, they did not want the former New York Central Har...

Regarding Noel Weaver's comment above, you would certainly need to think through what would happen after the train came to a stop. Lots of official people would be checking up on who pulled the cord and why (especially on the 20th Century!). Pulling of the emergency cord by an unauthorized person ca...

As you leave Zoo inbound to Upper Level 30th St (using one of the two usual inbound tracks, curving to your right), on your left you can see where there used to be two tracks descending to a tunnel portal between the inbound and outbound tracks. That tunnel joins the tunnel that curves the two trac...
