N340SG: Thanks for those updated numbers. At least for now, we'll have a completely accurate picture, though obviously the figures will be changing with each passing month. :)

In case anybody's counting, the highest numbered pair of M7's I've seen in revenue service is 7243-44. If the cars are being numbered consecutively, that means that in a fleet of 944 electric cars, approx. one train in four is now an M7. :)

ROEE has a point. Yes, we live in a changed world today. But railfanning has existed for decades, long before the terrorist attacks of the last few years. What are we supposed to do? Maybe shut down the entire railfan community (including this forum) in the name of national security? In the wake of ...

Hi Rob: My all-time favorite is the original R-40 with the slanted ends. It was considered a bad design by NYCTA, but I thought they were great. The original version had a very large front door window, ideal for railfanning. They have sentimental value for me 'cause in 1968, they were the very first...

NIMBY?........ I think they will be getting new cars by the end of this decade. The older cars of the fleet are from the late 1960's, were rehabbed in the 80's, but I think will soon be at the end of their useful life, although they do seem well maintained. (They also have some newer cars from the l...

Phil, I don't know if LIRR uses snow-cones on those. They did have freeze-ups this past winter. I heard crews telling dispatchers that they were using fusees to thaw out some horns that weren't working.

I'll take a guess that they're under the car, directly under the engineer's cab. I think someone said a while back that's where they are on the MU cars. I never understood why they aren't on the roof or front of the car. Anyone know if there is a functional reason why they put them under the cabs?

Surprise, Surprise!!

:o  :? Welcome to the 3rd generation of these forums. It's amazing what can happen when you go to work and don't check your computer for a couple of days. Like having the rug yanked out from under you. Good thing I saved and/or printed out some of the old postings that were interesting to me,...
