It's THE END OF AN ERA!!! Blow the darn whistle. The parade is passing by! (Get earplugs or close your windows for the 3 darn minutes that are so bothersome!)

Sorry, I was trying to be a bit too cute I think. I was hoping that there might be a relatively cheap, current technology that could be employed quickly and effectively to accomplish the same thing as having a 2nd person in the cab without actually having a 2nd body there.

A kitchen timer. Engineer should set it for 5 minutes before "end of line" stations/tracks. No human ever realizes they are going to fall asleep behind the wheel. (Not saying that this was a case of anyone falling asleep. Just offering a small specific suggestion for a very real human cond...

Transit visualization. Maybe that's why I like to look at Sigalert.com (NY-Brooklyn/Queens-Long Island), especially between 4:00 and 7:00 PM --- always reminds me why I love the LIRR!

I can remember a family day-trip (via LIRR) to Greenport some months after 9/11. It was a beautiful day and I was taking photos, including the ferries. Two flack-jacket wearing, rifle-toting military people approached us and sternly told us, "No photography". And, taking photos at RR and s...

Making crossings speed sensitive rather than fixed block would help. Or require all trains using a specific crossing to run at a specific speed. Why should they slow down an express train? The commuters trying to get into the city or out to the East end don't want their 60 - 80 MPH express trains t...

I know, I know --- going in the opposite direction of rush-hour traffic is rather a losing battle. But, when the LIRR is touting their train service to the Barkleys golf tournament, I must say I was disappointed this time around.
