Re: Business Class Shorthauling (Is Stupid and Rude)

In a 'walk up' business, where one never knows in advance who's coming and when, the only guidelines are using historical information for the business. Take McDonalds. They know, in a typical day (I'm making up numbers), they'll sell 1000 hamburgers, 1500 cheeseburgers, 1000 Big Macs and 1000 Quarte...

Been in BOS, NYP, PHL, WAS, CHI, PDX and LAX in the past 6 months or so. Perhaps my biggest single complaint is lack of consistency. Everything from furniture (the new stuff in BOS is very 'hard', and the new stuff in PHL & WAS is 'just OK' from a comfort standpoint. To me, NYP has the most comf...

My original picture aboard LS #449 on April 7 somewhere east of Pittsfield, MA. Resized down to meet attachment requirements.

Back before the 'computer age', running 2nd and 3rd sections of a train was the only way to handle more passengers (or freight) than the 'base' train would allow. Many of us have read of 2nd and 3rd sections of 'crack' trains mostly in the 30s and 40s. (why were they called 'crack' trains, I have no...

I wondered how long it would take CSXI to end the contract operation at the Worcester Intermodal ramp. As a now retired CSXI Intermodal Service Representative (their fancy job name...I was a gate clerk, basically) by strange turn of events I accidently found out the cost per 'lift' (one box or trail...

If you're coming from Chicago, I think I'd try the Blue Water to Port Huron then try Lyft or Uber. Alternatively, go to Detroit and do the same.

I suspect that one of the Amtrak safety rules states that at low level platforms, Amtrak staff must be at each open door to assist passengers. Amtrak even does that at the brand new high level platforms on the New Haven-Springfield corridor...2 conductors...2 doors open. They do 3 doors at Hartford,...

Several years ago in Trains magazine, there was an article about the 'ins and outs' of Amtrak LD scheduling. The most critical point being the ability to 'make connections' in Chicago. That's why trains from the east (29, 49, 51) arrive in the morning and departing trains to the west (3,5,7) leave i...

I don't understand why a bus could not be configured to have comfortable seating - see Limoliner, although the ride would still be rougher & more jerky than a train. A typical Amtrak car is 10' 6" wide vs an intercity bus is typically between 8' and 9' wide. Fitting two seats on each side ...

The last time I rode #66, about a year ago, the WAS-NYP conductor must have thought he was the announcer on some radio station. I don't think more than 10 minutes elapsed between announcements on the PA! About 10 minutes before the next stop, he'd make an announcement. Then 5 minutes before, 1 minut...

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if CAF is 'holding up' Amtrak for more money to complete the order...AKA...cost overruns. The REAL problem, however, is inflation. The $1,000,000 (nice round number for the sake of argument and in no way reflects reality) now 'costs' $1,200,000 to deliver. At t...

Based on my currently ticketed trip from #11 to #2 in early April, and that I have NOT received any communication from Amtrak that the connection is broken, I must assume it is a temporary track maintenance project somewhere along the way. Or else, Amtrak's email-generator system is quite slow to se...

Many large stations such as Philly have 2 staircases/escalators down of which they only use one. They could start using both, which I'm sure is what the PRR did back in the day. Otherwise why build two? Newark Penn is a large enough station with multi-point access as well as baggage handling, so mo...

Perhaps having the town permanently remove the grade crossing would solve this poor-old-me boys' problem.

They were down so they could post new schedules effective November 12. Good timing! Perhaps the biggest changes are a change of fonts to fit all the 'will (not) run' dates AND they finally removed the 'newspaper' reference in the business class description. It's about time! The papers have been gone...
