Don't forget the GN shop in Spokane: Hillyard. I believe it was their major shop.

The SP&S had C424, C425 and C636 road engines and two C415 switchers. Today we have three hoses on each side of the brake pipe hose that are: (from the outside) independent, actuating and main reservoir air. They are duplicated on each side. You only need to couple one of each hose, not all six ...

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming that normal operations would include 3 daytime trains and one after midnight in Sharon. What are your guesses for future increases in traffic?

Vermont (NECR) train frequency

Can anybody tell me how many trains run through Sharon, VT and at what times? Thanks

I remember Dayton to Indianapolis as lightly used in the '70's. I thought most Columbus--Indianapolis traffic went Columbus--Union City (PRR) and Union City--Indianapolis (NYC) after the merger. Of course by then the Little Miami was toast as a through route. I'm thinking that in pre merger days the...

The SD45 uses less fuel than an SD40 per horsepower. 3600 hp does pull harder than 3000 hp although both engines will start the same tonnage. I agree that a hogger is hard pressed to tell the difference when running one or the other. Any engineer that bumps his head going through the nose door of an...

I was impressed that one street ran on a truss bridge that spanned the entire yard. Even then, the bridge looked decrepit, although I think that it was still open. (This was around 1967). Growing up, I mistakedly thought that the Little Miami was the main line from Cincinnati to Columbus, and that ...

Approximate abandonment dates for the rail lines through Xenia: B&O: The line was officially abandoned in 1981 or 82. In 1984, when I first went to see "Blue Jacket", an outdoor drama located not far from the tracks, the grade crossing was freshly asphalted over and crossties were nea...

You can always try handlaying turnouts. I have found it to be very satisfying and not very hard. Also you can have fun building any turnout size. I got to the point where I just laid out ties, laid the two outer most rails, used a gauge to determine the frog location and angle and went from there. Y...

All this talk about safety regarding running backwards and no one has mentioned left handed signals. In the days of steam all signals were to the right of the centerline of the track to which they pertained. Later the FRA allowed the RR's to put signals on the left side. When you are running a high ...

I remember the new U23C's switching Selkirk in impressive 4500hp, 12 axle pairs trimming the bowl at the east end. Not too shabby power for a switch job. Not a big deal, but the U23Cs were never used in pairs on the East end. East end "pullers" were single U23C units only, operated with t...

What was the last new power delivered to PC? SD45's? -otto- The SD45's were early PC units. Most were PRR (130 units 6105-6234?) delivered just prior to the merger. Five (6235-6239?) were delivered after the merger (8/68?) but may have even been ordered by PRR. Any EMD after 1972 would have been a ...

Thanks for all the information on Xenia and area. My interest is renewed as I just found out a member of my local NRHS chapter lived in Yellow Springs in the '50's as I did in the '70's. He remembers the PRR running from Xenia to Springfield and I remember the PC running south from Springfield to Ye...
