Re: 1 Train Collision 1/4/24

I opine that it would make eminent sense to acquire radios that ping each other every second or three and provide an audible alarm to advise the radio user(s) to immediately apply the brakes and stop if the ping is not received. I could see that would be a nightmare full of false 'pings' starting o...

Why wouldn't they install 40 acres of solar panels above the rail yard and do something more productive with the other 36 acres? Likely because the cost of supports to maintain vertical clearance, horizontal clearance, and cabling could easily double or likely more the cost of the solar installatio...

Can't wait until they release to report on the radios involved including the antennas. Does anyone know if those conversations are recorded? My guess would say probably no due to the complexity of the system (number of trains, routes and probably channels etc.) Question; even thou the distance betw...

A fraction of what the taxpayer subsidizes roads and air. With respect to air, the US Department of Defense considers highways and civilian air essential to national security but does not consider passenger rail essential. Per US DOD travel policy: "The only Continental United States (CONUS) p...

The Hellgate line is only two tracks if memory serves. Double track with crossovers so single track operation overnights is possible. Much like the North River Tubes (the corridor's biggest bottleneck) may be single track weekends and overnight). Both two tracks, but not equivalent. The North River...

Yeah, I don't think you can really compare the proximity of large population centers within Europe to that in the US. VIA might be able to do it in Ontario and Quebec. Not so much Vancouver to Calgary or Edmonton..... As for the GHG awareness... give it time. The next generation will eventually rea...

[NTSB] Chair Jennifer Homendy said an out-of-service train with a few MTA workers aboard struck another train carrying about 300 passengers at a rail switch, causing both trains to derail. . . . . Earlier in the day, NYC Transit President Richard Davey said the passenger train had the green light to...

Shoulda extended PATH directly to the airport, with one station serving the three terminals through walkways. Or one station for each terminal. Or just use more buses. Should do what SEPTA did at Philadelphia Airport. Extend the rail line into the Airport with a stop at each major terminal. :-D Fra...

Amtrak head end power is 480 volts AC three phase, diodes can't be used as diodes would only work for DC power.

But what constitutes something being OOS? Does it require legal definition? Is it based on how long a train has not traversed the tracks on? Everyone can agree here that the TRIT is 'OOS,' yet the crossings are still maintained, and, IIRC, the crossings for the TRIT are not "exempt" for s...

One other historical oddity is that Hamilton Station might have been originally intended as an Amtrak stop, on the May 1998 system map before opening in February 1999 (originally scheduled for end of 1998). That map also shows Hoboken as an Amtrak station? I wonder if the plan was for Clockers to s...
