A scheduled train due to arrive at such-and-such a time and then due to leave again in the opposite direction would have no reason to go into the station building unless they observed the order board Thanks bmcdr! No requirement to "check in" unless the order board was set. I should keep ...

I'm looking at a "street view" image of the Greenville station using Google Earth (doesn't seem to work with Google Maps). I'm wondering as to why you'd put a semaphore on a station that was the end of the line. After all, the train isn't (or shouldn't be, anyway) going any further, and if...

I heard a story that back in the 1970’s a local pilot flew a small plane underneath the Greenville trestle. He did this as a stunt Guess it did happen.. From: http://www.experiencefestival.com/a/Greenville_New_Hampshire_-_History/id/5101327 Greenville once had a Boston & Maine Railroad trestle ...

Much of the line through Townsend and West Groton is slated to become a rail-trail.
With all the (literally) back yards the line passes through especially in the Harbor area, is there much NIMBY-ism around this?

Thanks Guys! I wonder if it was ever formally abandoned south of the NH. border. I did find a site with a little info: http://www.nashuacitystation.org/?railroad=greenville . I find it interesting that it shows on the GIS map of Townsend still as the Peterboro & Shirley Railroad. Section of map ...

When was the last service on the Ayer - Greenville, Nh. Branch? I remember seeing a small freight plodding across Rte 119 back in probably the late 50's or early 60's (one of my "early memories"). Was this line ever more than marginally profitable? Seems like they just "walked away&qu...

Hmm! You're right. I just noticed the tracing is gone from Google Earth except for north of Hudson Rd. I'm fairly sure the iron's been removed from "on post", however it still remains fairly intact on the ROW through Sudbury. I don't think the "T" has any intention of paying the ...

There was (still shows on town GIS map) a spur that came off in South EAST Sudbury (A bit east of the S. E. Sudbury station) in a northerly direction to just south of route 20 (right on the west side of the Buddy Dog Humane Society building) almost opposite Goodmans Hill Road. The property is now ow...

Thanks! It's that type of thing that sometimes get's me wondering what else might just be lying around "hiding in plain sight".

Apologies if this is in the wrong spot. I'm wondering if this Bay Colony refugee:

was still rusting in repose on the east end of the old Millis branch?

Thanks. Much appreciated, however that conflicts with this excerpt from "The history of Sudbury, Massachusetts. 1638-1889" By Alfred Sereno Hudson The northern branch of the Old Colony Railroad passes through the locality, and has a station which is called North Sudbury. About a half mile ...

The cabeese! I was amazed a few weeks ago to find them on Google Earth. Especially as back in the early '90's they were for sale and my wife and I "toured" them with vague "summer home" dreams in our heads. They were "rough" but had possibilities back then. I'm really s...

Yes, the old Ft. Devens Annex. It had quite a network of track. I'm about 2 Km. from it. I remember in the 50's a quite serviceable grade crossing over Hudson Road adjacent to the main entrance. Never saw it used though.. IIRC all the iron was pulled in the early to mid 60's.
