Hell Gate Bridge might be the most majestic approach to any big city anywhere in the US. Noel Weaver I would have to agree. That said I also like crossing the river in Trenton, and passing a certain unique bridge on the western side of the tracks. Trenton Makes the World Takes written on that gorge...

Two so far, the first being the Illinois Terminal unit at Horseshoe Curve in September of 2014 ( would've snuck past me if not for that bright green and yellow paint ). The second was the Erie at Bound Brook in June of 2015, leading a tank train.

Here's another reason to avoid having accidents on your railroad - The entire NORAC Rule Book, NorthEast Corridor Employees' Timetable, and various Bulletin Orders were used by the National Transportation Safety Board as part of their evidence, and so are available on the Internet via the above lin...

That's true ADL6009 . The forecast up thru yesterday was for 12 inches max, and was updated to 18-24 inches today. Guess the storm swung further north than we'd hoped. Morisot , I know they'd officially shut down operations at 4PM. I started hearing these stuck trains around 5-6PM. They must have s...

The Roadrailer was an option,it was within the Plate B profile and could have been run thru the North(Hudson)river and East river tubes. From what I heard the Pennsy tried running freight through the tubes and it resulted in failures of the knuckles from the forces. Which is the main reason why no ...

I watched the eastbound Pennsylvanian come and go from the overhead bridge in Altoona (and repeated the ritual in Tyrone on my way home two days later). Saw lots of trains rounding the HC; saw a teenage railfan with two scanners photographing an eastbound (I wished him well in his hobby); saw actio...

Horseshoe Curve, PA, well where to start. First I would recommend a visit to the Railroaders Memorial Museum in downtown Altoona, PA ( there's a discount if you purchase both a ticket to the museum and the curve on the same day ). Altoona offers a lot of photographic opportunities for the railfan, w...

This incident was a "perfect storm" ... a whole bunch of things lined up perfectly for something bad to happen. How many accidents have a fireball penetrating the passenger compartment of a rail car? Sure, hit a tanker semi and one has a lot more fuel to vaporize and burn, but an SUV? Eve...

gotta love guys like commuter x. they are against pretty much everything, but never offer an alternative. im sure if we knew what he did for a living, we could rip it to shreds. i seem to remember medicine? Here's one ... We live on a g-d dammed island. Why isn't there ferry service to/from Manhatt...

Sunday's New York Times has a "quite interesting" Opinion, repeat Opinion, column suggesting that the New York City Convention Center be relocated to atop Sunnyside Yard. Aside from being likely the world's largest underground rail yard and further a source of otherwise avoidable employee...

600 was on the head end of train 158 yesterday. Engineer gave one heckuva horn show too ( especially around the Philadelphia area ), which I heard from my seat on the train.

From the article, LOL: "The first set of railcars were supposed to have been delivered a week ago, but CSX, a national freight operator hired to haul the garbage, mistakenly sent them to New Jersey" JS At least they didn't get lost in Selkirk, which is still one of the running CSX jokes. ...

Personally I don't see any replacement coming soon, what with all the DCC and computer technology available ( they can work in tandem or stand alone ). The PC computer is an alternative to DCC, and can be used to run a model railroad. In fact there are various services that help you set up a system ...

If Amtrak fails them too many times they will look elsewhere. (Even if Amtrak's failures can be blamed on several other entities ... they paid Amtrak for transportation.) Exactly - they'll vote with their feet and their credit card. And when you look at the miserable performance of 29/30 and 48/49 ...

Funny that you should bring this topic up, because I did the say in the LIRR union negotiations thread. Kinda rejuvenated it to a small degree too. You can find a brief discussion of what might happen with the NYAR here http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=153089&start=375&quo...
