Ha! Don't be concerned about the pre-assessment testing and scary speeches being a waste of time. Or money for that matter. The railroads will waste plenty of their time and pay you to do so over a 30+ year career. And a waste of money too you say? Nah. The railroads will spend $100K (yes, $100,000....

Many posts and replies here are from those who are new to the board and are seeking employment. Do a quick search for background check info dating back 10 years on this issue in this forum. Those who work for class 1 railroads and provide advice do so as we have been through the rodeo ourselves. Mos...

It's been 10+ years since I bought my first (and only) Autumn Creek bags set. All are still holding up to the conditions of daily use in the yard or road.

I'll believe it when I see it. Till then, the P32's will be switchers and the P40/42's shall be road dogs. While I dislike working GE eqpt., the GE eqpt Amtrak has no doubt lived through many a cycle through the mandatory CFR and PM inspections than I believe they were ever designed/engineered for. ...

Well we have her in Miami now. Maybe the 516 is headed that way.

Well no replacement yet. However, Sanford did swap out the 516 we have been using in the Miami yard with the 511. They swap out motors between yards for preventative maintenance and inspections as required by the cfr's.

HA! Replace them with P40/42's? I love it when those who do not work with/on the equipment/Carrier chime in. About the only useful feature that the P40/42's have for switching is the slow backing exciter. Computerized braking is a real trick to work with when switching as well. They have no visibili...

That is correct as far as making up lost time or getting in ahead of schedule in SLC/DEN. The train runs non-stop either way expect for a crew change in Green River, WY. There were times we would get the train into SLC about 6:30-7:00 pm allowing the passengers time to detrain and wander around The ...

Still working the yard in Miami with it. Tied the 516 down this morning after using her all morning. Going anywhere? With what to replace it with?

Oh I wish it were true. I spend more time in that beast than I do my own bed. While it is capable of use on the road or yard, it really is not a yard motor that is easily used compared to the switch engines the freight dogs use. Thank goodness the 8BWH's have the old air brakes instead of the Knorr ...

Sounds like you have your degree already. No issues with your age and the UP would not show interest if your background/experience did not fit with the profile. UP is a good company to work for on the Mgt. side of things. In the transportation arena you'll deff. work lots of hours, weekends, holiday...

I concur. Given the unique environment that the railroad operates on a 24/7/365 basis and the ability to cope with and understand various regimented rules, operating procedures and management that can be very trying it is a very difficult career for the railroader and the family. The need to focus o...

It certainly depends upon the medical condition and if you are able to pass the mandatory physical requirements of the job as outlined by the FRA. If you do not drive how do you expect to get to work when called by the crew caller at 2:30 a.m.? The railroad has many other options as far as employmen...

If you are 100% with your current carrier and are hired on with Amtrak you will get full rate of pay. However, during training/qualifying you will not be paid overtime, only straight hourly. You'll also retain your vacation allowance based upon years of service with the RRB.

The wages are based upon a union contract. You'll be paid the same progressive rate (you'll start at 75% of the full rate until you have been on the property for 5 years) no matter where you are based. You'll make more money based upon overtime than the minimum weekly guarantee of 40 hours a week (e...
