Chiming in here, I've been emailing with Sand Box John separately about this topic, as well as another railfan who can make himself known if he chooses, I don't know if he lurks or posts here these days.

It's good to see there is a group of people interested in getting WMATA to consider saving a pair or two of cars for historical preservation purposes. I know 1000-1001 are often thought of as being suitable for that purpose, but I'd be happy with any two (or four) cars at this point. I think the main thing here is to make sure that we organize our efforts and get the ball moving on this sooner rather than later.

Some questions for everyone reading this so far:

1. Does anyone have any connections at any of the museums mentioned up thread? I think we should add the DMV Transit Museum to the list (I know people there).
2. Does anyone have any connections with someone on the rail side of WMATA or otherwise is high ranking who might be interested in this cause?

I was planning a post on my website (orenstransitpage.com) about this topic in the next few weeks and would be happy to use that platform as a launchpad for this effort so to speak. Having a semi-formulated plan of action by then might be useful for the cause.

You would think saving 1000-1001 would be a no-brainer. These are the first subway cars ever built for the capital of the United States. They are an obvious historic item.

Honestly, its kind of ridiculous that we are the only ones talking about this. Even if you're not a rail fan, these cars are part of U.S. history. Coca Cola has a museum of all their old bottles and cans. Yet, WMATA is ready to trash Metro's first rail cars ever built without a second thought? Amazing.

SchuminWeb would be a good person to talk to as he works in the WMATA bus division. He may have some connections.

Here's a view of 1088 heading up US-1 on Tues AM in Laurel. Appears that the seats and trucks are going w/ the cars.

I wonder why that panel was punched out in the last image?

The first 1000-series train still in revenue service to be scrapped is expected within the April-May timeframe. The 8-12 that've been sent up so far are all former derailment/crash cars (as might be obvious).

That's the panel where the Metro M logo was, and if I'm correct its trademarked & has to removed once WMATA no longer owns the asset (similar to spray painting out airline logos after a crash)

Why were they keeping so many non-revenue 1k cars? Were they originally planning to repair them and put them back into service?

I'm guessing now that the scrapping has begun, Metro will stop repairing any 1k cars that need major work. They will probably just run them until their first major issue.

Am I correct in assuming that Silk Road use MD US-1 all the way to Baltimore?

All of the cars I have seen in Baltimore have has their M metro logo painted over.

You will notice all of the brake hardware has been removed from the truck. All of the cars I have thus far seen in Baltimore also lack their brake hardware.

What's sad is these cars have carried destination code 34 sense day they rolled off the assembly line in Winder Georgia 40 years ago, they will never get the chance display that destination.

I would presume so. I only trailed the convoy to MD32, Had plenty of escorts and MSP. The convoy took both lanes of US 1 I got the picture from a turn lane & I was surprised to see the seats still installed.

Remember folks, when they are gone they will be all gone.

Silk Road is storing the trailer they use to haul the cars at the scrap yard in Baltimore.
