I recall some murals depicting the Transcontinental RR. I doubt that they addressed the "hijinks" of the "Big Four", an example; Sacramento was a "foothill" town, as in Denver or Salt Lake, as they had Congress convinced to get them "mountain miles' paid from Sacramento. Lest we forget, during that time frame, there were a few other "things on the plate", like a Civil War, needing to be addressed.
Here's an interior shot, which appears to be post-earthquake. Not pretty. http://www.charnel.com/automatism/morbi ... udius.html
And here's another recent exterior shot. I'm not sure what the foreground structure is. Looks like part of an elevated platform, but the platform I remember was at ground level. http://www.acme.com/jef/photos/d3734/d3734i0028.html
This looks a little familiar http://www.acme.com/jef/photos/d3816/d3816i0028.html
One thing I remember about the platform canopy at Oakland was the ornate iron work across the top edge. I caught a glimpse of it from the freeway a few years back.
