I co-worker and I were waiting for our trains and she brought up the question why is there no R4? Was this a route abandoned by SEPTA years back? Or was it a route that was planned but never got off the ground? What color was it if it ever existed?

This has been answered in various forums. Hit groups.google.com and look for "R4" in phl.transportation.

Short answer: The original tunnel operating plan by Vukan Vuchic assumed that Chestnut Hill West would be connected to the ex-Reading side. R4 was to be a Bryn Mawr-Fox Chase routing. When the tunnel opened and the Swampoodle Connection hadn't been built, they paired Chestnut Hill West with Fox Chase as a temporary route designated R8.

AFAIK, there was no color designation for R4.
