Why in the Sam Hill is the baggage dorm behind the sleepers? Sheesh. Does Amtrak even understand consist building?

I think it makes perfect sense. Baggage cars tend to be at either end of the train, and by attaching it to the sleepers (with the dorm side towards the rest of the consist) you make it easier for crews to access the baggage.

Back on Saturday afternoon 4/30/2022 I caught a backwards NYC -3 Portland car on the rear on Train 291, this was my first time seeing a backward Private car on the Empire Corridor.

Last Monday 5/9/2022 I caught FRANCES L. SUTER, Pacific Home and Kitchi Gammi Club private cars on the rear on Train 49.

Both of those were seen at Croton-Harmon station.

Private Car Service is proud to offer a private railcar excursion from Los Angeles to Seattle and return departing Thursday, September 29 and returning on Tuesday, October 4, 2022. Our two historic private railroad cars will travel the full length of the route of the ”Coast Starlight”, from the Los Angeles Union Station, with 113 miles along the Pacific Coast of Central California, through the Cascade Mountains, along Puget Sound to Seattle’s King Street Station, where they will be parked for our weekend stay. On Monday morning we retrace our route and return to Los Angeles on Tuesday evening.

WRT Jeff’s post above, the cars being run are ATSF business car 23 and Pullman PACIFIC UNION (10-6 from Buss, 1950).
