I know there is a Pavonia yard in Camden. There is also a Pavonia Ave in Jersey City that was the site of the Erie terminal and associated yard. Is this a coincidence? Does anyone know what Pavonia meant? Was it a person's name? If so, who was he?

A bit more:

According to local historian Joan D. Lovero, "Pauw called this land Pavonia, basing his choice upon the Latin spelling of his own name, pavo, which means 'peacock.'" ( 8). An absentee landlord, Pauw did not fulfill his obligations to settle his property and was required to sell his holdings back to the trading company in 1633.

So, did his land patent extend all the way to Camden?

Pavonia= land of the peacocks. St. Peter's College, in Jersey City, calls its teams the Peacocks and Peahens. The Path station at Newport mall used to be called Pavonia Ave.

PS Elizabeth, and much of what is now Union County, used to be called Turkey, or Turkeytown. Some early American poultry buff must have been in charge of placenames.
