that sounds like an urban legend, if ever there was one.

of course, the Lasalle & Bureau County railroad ran a side business in the 1970s, selling off interchange cars they didn't own for scrap. Coupla guys went to jail for that. PennCentral never missed 'em...

I remember reading that story in Trains as well - it was probably about 7 or 8 years ago, adn it was in their "railroad tails" section or whatever tehy call it....
