'TRANSFORMATIVE' RANCHO CUCAMONGA-TO-LAS VEGAS HIGH-SPEED RAIL PROJECT SET TO BREAK GROUND IN 2024

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KABC) -- The Cucamonga Station is about to undergo a major renovation.
...
In addition, the Cucamonga Station will be transformed into a true multimodal transit center that will connect passengers to points beyond the Inland Empire via Metrolink, Omnitrans commuter buses, and to the Ontario International Airport through a 4-mile underground tunnel.

"We're going to see a transformation to a station that is truly a world class facility," said Dr. Ray Wolfe with the San Bernardino County Transit Authority

Metrolink will need to help out with better scheduling and enabling reverse transfers at the San Bernardino stations (which their trip planner doesn't currently show) so those taking the Orange County line can get back to Cucamonga.

I understand that most of the Metrolink San Bernardino line to Rancho Cucamonga is single track. While it could be double tracked to allow express services, it may also make just as much sense to extend Brightline West trains to LA Union Station as it would to improve the San Bernardino line to enable express services, but a couple of years of knowing who uses the train may reveal that instead of Downtown LA, a better extension would be towards Orange (where they could connect with CAHSR, Surflliner, and Metrolink trains from the east and south).

The existing tracks and signaling along the corridor only supports speeds up to 79 mph. Much of it is single track, and few single track lines support headways less than 30 minutes, and even fewer headways less than 20 minutes. So, there really is not capacity as is on this corridor for express trains.
LA Union Station to Rancho Cucamonga per the train schedule is 83 minutes over 42 miles, so the Metrolink trains average speed is around 30.5 mph.

Is it possible brightline could pay for sidings to increase service to them?

They would need something like Caltrain did at Bayshore and Lawrence; i.e., 4 tracks for a considerable distance east and west of a station, with high-speed turnouts permitting Metrolink trains to diverge and merge at track speed, decelerating and accelerating on the station tracks without impeding a following train not making a station stop. I was told of one location, where the predecessor railroad was single track, and Metrolink had to negotiate with the owner of the adjoining property for a small bit of land for a signal bungalow, there being insufficient space to put it on the existing railroad right-of-way.
