NJT wants to increase capacity between Secaucus Junction and the Meadowlands Complex, with a goal of moving 20,000 customers an hour following major events at MetLife Stadium. On a daily basis at peak hours of operation, NJT anticipates needing to move up to 6,000 American Dream customers and employees per hour.

They've issued an RFP for this but it doesn't seem to be available online at the moment.

>>>". While the Meadowlandsto Secaucus route is the minimum operating segment of the new route for the purposes of this challenge, we also welcome scalable solutions that can be expanded to serve adjacent communities with direct access to Secaucus Junction"<<< This is said in a press report on this initiative: "Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, NJ Transit's board chair and commissioner of the state Transportation Department . . . said . . . . It addresses moving people to and from the complex, but it also has the potential to expand through Jersey City and as far west as Montclair." https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/ ... 798384002/

  • Extend the stub track through the complex to link up with the Main /Bergen line right before crossing the Hackensack river.

Build a lay up yard to stage equipment North of the Sports complex on the PVL. Through run the trains from the PVL to Hoboken.

Run trains from the PVL through the complex, during special events, and onto the NEC, NJCL and RVL via the connection near the Bergen arches.

Build a connection from the PVL line to the Main/Bergen line to allow a Northward running of trains from Hoboken, through Sports complex-PVL-Bergen/Main line.

Build the previously proposed West Shore line connection through the Sports complex.

Extend the Hudson Bergen Light Rail from Tonnelle ave through the Harmon Meadow center to the Sports complex.

More on this,

https://www.nj.com/news/2021/08/amid-qu ... adium.html

NJ Transit officials took the first step toward creating a new transit system to serve MetLife Stadium and the American Dream retail and entertainment complex in the Meadowlands, approving a $3.5 million contract to do a study.

The system, dubbed Transitway, is being explored to avoid the nightmare scenario of potential highway gridlock on days when NFL home football games happen as shoppers flock to nearby American Dream. An October 2012 traffic study by Sam Schwartz Engineering predicted 151,000 weekday visitors could come to American Dream after it is completed and fully occupied.

Again for me, complete the existing rail spur through the complex back to the mainline where it can run back to Secaucus Jct. or up the Main/Bergen line., Pascack Line North. Also extend the Hudson Bergen Light rail through to the complex.

Now that's funny. It's even money that American Dream won't even be there by the time this is completed.

I agree with the above, extend the spur, connect via a flyover to the main line. Service pattern would follow the peak direction relative to the Meadowlands, in other words for the start of an event, trains would go Hoboken > Secaucus > Meadownlands > Loop > Secaucus > Hoboken. During the end of an event, trains would do the reverse staging on the loop . I'd also route PVL trains to use the Meadowlands station full time so when trains stage, they aren't blocking traffic. The type of train would ideally be an EMU, but a DMU (with full passenger pass through - no "noses") would also suffice.

I second this. They can either make a new branch going west from Tonnelle Avenue that also services Harmon Meadow, the Exposition Center, and downtown Secaucus or build it through the Bergen Arches from Jersey City and extend it up to the Meadowlands.

The construction of a new rail line to serve only periodic large events is not cost effective. Use of buses for these off peak hour events is far more cost effective, as is a dedicate busway requiring only pavement versus far more expensive rail infrastructure.

Apparently the time has come to do a phase 2 study worth a cool $35M: https://www.njtransit.com/press-release ... e-capacity
Today, the Board authorized HNTB Corporation to enter Phase 2 for an amount not to exceed $34,952,784.55 million plus five percent for contingencies, subject to the availability of funds.

The goal of the project is to offer a solution that increases service capacity to seamlessly move customers between the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex and Secaucus Junction Station. This important infrastructure investment will ensure that the area has the necessary public transportation system in place to attract and maintain some of the world’s largest entertainment and sporting events, boosting economic prosperity in the region and throughout all of New Jersey.
