If you want a new idea, read an old book. The GP9 Tally in the January-February 1972 issue of Extra 2200 South has an interesting entry: Canadian Pacific GP9 #8839 was built with a 16-567D engine rated at 1800 horsepower. This would be GMD serial A-1730 on order C-260 shipped August 31, 1959. This appears to be an engine demonstration by GMD, does anyone have additional information on this?

This happened during the time when EMD was having problems with burned exhaust valves. CP had derated their GP9s to 1500 hp to reduce the problems. Building the last CP GP9 with a 16V-567D engine was an attempt to solve this issue, it helped but did not solve it. The eventual solution was to use an Inconel Alloy to make the exhaust valves. The Baltimore and Ohio RR also received one GP9/18 hybrid for the same reason.
