Orange County proposes $18 million rail trail from Chester to Salisbury Mills

Orange County officials have proposed an $18 million project to create a 10-mile recreational trail on an abandoned railroad in Chester, Blooming Grove and Cornwall.

The paved path would be Orange County's second rail trail and would intersect with its first - the Heritage Trail - at the county-owned Camp La Guardia property in Chester. It would extend northeast from there through Blooming Grove and Washingtonville to the Moodna Viaduct, a scenic railroad trestle in the Salisbury Mills section of Cornwall.

Because its eastern endpoint is near the Metro-North Railroad station in Salisbury Mills, county officials plan to tap federal funds for mass transit by arguing the trail would enable commuters to bike or walk to the train station.

The county began building its Heritage Trail along the former Erie Railroad in collaboration with a different nonprofit group in 1993, and it has expanded it in increments over the ensuing 28 years. The trail, popular with walkers, runners and cyclists, now stretches 18 miles from Harriman to Middletown.
