My wife and I are thinking of going on the Hobo Railroad all-day foliage trip between Meredith to Lincoln. Has anyone taken this trip? Is it worth a 6 hour drive from PA?

Any information on past experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dr. J

I have ridden the all-day foliage train and it is well worth it! Last year we chartered the "party caboose". It looks hokey, but it was a BLAST. Lots of room, private, had a bathroom in it, plus sitting in the cupola. The train runs from 11 am to roughly 6 pm or so. This year, we chartered the Determination pullman car for the oct. 1st run - should be an excellent time again, plus that car is beautiful (we were married in it last fall as well, ran Lincoln -Ashland and return with some nice stops along the way).

An added bonus is that this year, the lunch is being catered and is in the restored B&M station in Plymouth. The common man buffet last year was pretty weak.

If you want to do the ride, I suggest calling because I believe at least one of the two dates is sold out.

Thanks. The date we wanted is sold out. Maybe next year.

If you still feel the 6 hour drive may not be worth it and want to do more train rides, also try the Conway Scenic RR in North Conway, NH which offers 3 different train rides. Go to http://conwayscenic.com/ for more details.
A few other railroads in NH that maybe worth riding are:
the Wilton Scenic RR http://www.wiltonscenicrr.com/
Clarks Trading Post's train ride the White Mountain Central

train page http://www.clarkstradingpost.com/railroad.html
events page (including train rides) http://www.clarkstradingpost.com/anniversary.html
Someone told me once that the White Mountain Central actually uses a ROW from an old logging railroad?

Just another website that I found that may help you http://www.foliagetrains.com/

While there are no first class coaches or dining cars, don't forget about the Cog Railway. The view in any season is spectacular climbing up or down Mt Washington. http://www.cog-railway.com/

Wouldn't the Cog railway be closed by October? Snowed in by then? It is a great experience, so earlier plans are probably in order.

The Cog railway operates year round now. It started last year; however it stops going to the summit sometime in mid to late october. From that point to May, they go only half way.

Thanks for the info. I knew they were using it as a ski lift recently, but didn't realize the part-way trips were being run for the general public.

NO, NO, NO LOL... I meant that for the ski lift. They run about 1/3 up the mountain for the skiers. They don’t necessarily run for the general public… so another word, if the snow is on the ground and the skiers come, they’ll run 2 or 3 trains.
