It's called AEI, for automatic equipment identification. Here's a link that discusses the technology in its railroad application.

AEI has been a very important advancement for railroads. They can now get an accurate picture of what equipment is in a train as it passes a reader site.

Sounds like the old ACI system has been reborn.

Reborn with a much higher level of accuracy....especially since nearly all clerical jobs in yard and terminals have vanished over the years.....the only checking trains now get is when they pass the AEI scanners.

Shippers and consignees (and equipment owners) can now get a close to real time location for their cars -- right down to last AEI scan that's in the system.
