On my way up north for the maple fest, I stopped in Binghamton, and was fortunate enough to capture some images of the "dead line" in Binhamton yard, under invitation, and escort. Sad pics indeed:

Two general overviews of the equipment:

Next, the GP 18's, with stacks capped, and awaitng their fate:

Next, the GP-20's:

And to wrap things up, the U23B and the NW-2:

Maybe they could find a safe haven on the CMSL, M&E, DL, or that line in Jim Thorpe, PA.

These are classics, all 3 should be preserved.

I think this is the "waiting line" not the dead line. Most of these engines, are not dead, just waiting final decision.

Never say never, but I think these engines have all run their last miles for the NYS&W so in that sense they are dead. Some of them may find new homes elsewhere. It all depends on what the asking price is.

From the "Glass is half full) perspective....I was 15 years old, living in Butler in 1963 when the GP-18's arrived and remember well that the crews were very happy to be out of the RS-1's, of which the oldest was 20 years old and very well worn. The fact that the EMD's have survived a 45 year career is quite amazing. The GP-20's were well worn coming off the Santa Fe when the TP&W got them, and that they have lasted as long as they did is another tip of the hat to EMD. Just the fact that we've been able to watch and hear pioneers of the first generation diesels this long is a feat in itself.

Did all of these locomotives crap-out mechanically, and the NYSW does'nt want to repair them, or were they taken out and sidelined because of newer locomotives being put into service?

The NW unit confuses me, as that was a private unit (I thought). That, to me, is the best proof that it's not truthfully a deadline.

These up for sale or no?

Alas, it is indeed a deadline.

Supposedly it was private, but the owner may have died and willed it to the railroad.

I do know it ran it's last trip on an Ontrack Syracuse Express train and is stored serviceable needing either a 92-day or brake inspection, at least per a Railfarce caption a few months back.

Which I would imagine is all that's really wrong with some of the other units - they're due for inspections.

WARNING THE FOLLOWING IS A RUMOR!!!!

There is a "RUMOR" going around that NYOW/NYSW #116 is going to the Delaware & Ulster Railroad in Arkville.

A while ago the story was that 116 was going to be part of the Walter Rich Railroad museum in Franklin but that has been denied (although apparently there was some thought about it but they decided against it). I guess the question is how much they want for it, but the D&U people always seem to be able to find huge amounts of money.

If memory serves me correctly the 116 was owned by a member of Delaware Otsego's board. If memory further serves me correctly the man's name is Adelbert Button.

From what I am hearing about the "dead line": Some of the units were taken out of service due to mechanical problems, and some were stored serviceable, but needing some mechanical attention. As far as the GP18 fleet one is out of service and the other two were in service, just needing some attention.

If they don't find a new home those frames will hopefully live on as gen-sets.
Seems to be a popular fate of older four axle units displaced by stricter air quality standards, higher fuel costs and better second hand units being spun off from the Class 1's
Guess I'd better get out there and get some photos.

why not try out the re-power program that EMD is putting out there. using 8-710 2000hp motors?
