Here are two more shots:

Also, the caption of the NERAIL photo is incorrect. This unit is not the former FEC 101. 101 and 103 went to VTR. PW received 100 and 102.

Time, money and equipment availability come to mind...

If they're lacking time/money/equipment, how were they able to do 4301?

maybe 582 is not much of performer ? could it be P&W wants to unload it ??

My understanding from conversations with other on other boards that the reason the 582 never got painted was because of needs for the engine, and the availability of crews in the paint shop to work on the engine. it takes at least 6 weeks to prep and paint, and the P&W has not had the time (last winter was the all the snow) this year was painting the 4301. so maybe now that they have more power it might get painted sometime down the line.

has been modified to fit on the Northeast Corridor
What was needed to modify; lower the height somehow?
Height slightly reduced by removing things from the top such as the horn which was moved to the side.

It also looks like the radiator fans were sunken down a bit, and notches cut in the plow (for third rail territory).

For better or worse, there are parts of the MN catenary that still sag when the weather gets warm, the cleaner
the roof is,the less chance of getting zapped by 12.5 kv wire that's sagging.
P&W has/had units get zapped by the catenary during the summer months, fan housings and roof panels showing the scars.

On a somewhat related note, it looks like 3901's horns were recently relocated to the side of engine plus the marker lamps were removed and covered. I would post photographic evidence but I get an error message "Sorry, board attachement quota has been reached."
