For a complete explanation of this project, see this thread

The last, and certainly the largest part of the equipment rundown, is the electric push-pulls. These are the majority of the trains which run in and out of Penn Station NY (and 100% of the Long Branch/M-E/MSU to NYP runs), as well as a handful of Hoboken runs. Most of NJT's push-pull fleet (for both electrics and diesels) are the single-level Comet II, III, IV & V. These run in sets of 6 to 9 cars (10-12 car sets were more common before the multilevels became common place, and I am unaware of any more runs that use them), and sets are often mixed. They are refered to in the run guide as EP's. Each EP is pushed or pulled by an ALP44 or ALP46 electric engine. NJT's newest passenger cars are the Multilevels, refered to as ML's. These CAN run in sets with the Comets, but as of yet NJT hasn't taken the MBTAish attitude of mixing single & multi cars in a set, and the ML's are separated from the EP's in the manipulation, as Great Notch & Long Branch yards do not have a proper inspection track (Long Branch still gets one ML a night, which is there strictly as a layup). Obviously the ML's are heavier, and require the ALP46 to pull them, which is why more ALP46's are on order (NJT currently has 29 of them). A single ALP46 can handle up to 10 cars, which is the max NJT is running, although there used to be some 12 car ML sets with an engine on each end.

Because Sunnyside Yard is set up in a loop format, any set which gets sent there will return to NYP with the engine on the opposite end. Because of this, a run can have an engine on either end. NJT makes no attempt to control whether a run is push or pull, since they run about equally (I understand that performance is slightly better when in pull mode).

I have accounted for 65% of the sets used over a single day. Because of that, the other 35% are educated guesses or data collected on other days. Therefore, a large amount of this information may be incorrect, although it's a run guide that theoretically COULD work.

-------

NJT requires 43 push-pull sets (15 ML's & 28 EP's) to operate on a given weekday. There are currently 141 multilevel cars, including 15 cab cars running on electric sets. With another 72 cars running on diesel sets, that's 213 total multi-level cars in service on a given weekday, not counting the equipment used for ACES. There are currently 188 comet cars, including 28 cab cars running on electric sets. With another 223 comets running on diesel sets, that's a total of 411 comet cars running on the NJ system, with the exception of the Atlantic City sets.

Is Long Branch Yard sort of creating a problem for getting more multilevels onto the North Jersey Coast Line - due to inspection pit issues? This line, really seems to have the least amount of multilevels running on it, especially for a line running in/out of NYC etc.

Alot of this is incorrect. Trains 6631 and 6639 are ML equipment to start with.
EP-8 = Long Branch Yard Tk 2/3224/6627/6650/6643/6668/3283/Long Branch Yard Tk 5
EP-9 = Dover Yard Tk S1/X603/3223/3236/SSY/3269/3276/6295/6280/6201/Great Notch Yard Tk 3
Train 3224 is the Club Car, it returns to LB on 3269 as of right now and train 6627 turns from the equipment on 6628.

Yes, all ML starts out of Long Branch have to be "juggled" with sets from other depots to ensure undercar inspections.

A few revisions:

- There are 4 8-EP and 1 6-EP sets in Great Notch.
- 6431 is programed to operate with an 8-EP and 6435 with a 9-EP
- Track assignments in Dover yard are not prearranged and change from day to day.
- The train that spends the night in Hoboken (off 684 til the schedule change) is an 8-EP and spends the night on 17 Depot
- Great Notch has a pedestal track and can, I believe, perform undercar inspections on MLs

It can, but doesn't usually perform undercar insections.

This is either wrong, or last night the consists were a bit off...
Last night, 6666 ran with 9 Comets. 6683 ran with 9 Multilevels. I was on both, so I know for a fact that they were not the same consist.

Thanks. I am well aware that this first draft has more than its share of kinks in it. The second draft is still being worked on, and should be a lot closer to the actual truth (I actually already had 6666 and 6683 recorded in my spreadsheet exactly as you said).
