New yellow stripes on IC engines...yuk!

Just thought i'd vent... they look UGLY!!! If they're going to put those on they might as well paint them in CN colors while they're at it then...

Transport Canada has new regulations requiring all locomotives operating in Canada to have reflective strips (preferably yellow) be applied to promote rail crossing safety, so I guess we'll have to live with it.

What is so bad about the yellow stripes? Someone please enlighten me.

I can't truly answer that, but get the impression that this change looks to some like a further loss of the IC identity and continued assimilation into the CN image.

It's strange, but many here in Canada perceive that IC has taken over CN with E.H. Harrison now in charge.

I'm loving it. The yellow stripe gives a dark locomotive some character. It reminds me of wearing a black and white tuxedo, but having a pink bowtie. I really like the yellow stripe on the -9 . By March 2010 ALL locomotives have to have reflective striping and railcars by March 2015.

The yellow stripe is actually a requirement of the FRA (or some US regulator) as an attempt to cut down on people driving into the side of trains. Notice all of the new or shopped freightcars that have vertical reflective yellow decals on them... same law.

The IC engines don't look so bad... check out a UP engine with the yellow frame stripe, yuck!

So you'd rather have the white non-reflective stripes than improved visability at grade crossings at night?? Do you guys realize how crazy that sounds??

You'd be surprised at how much more yellow "pops" (and actual art/design term) than white. That and yellow really grabs your attention (Why is yellow the signature color of Lamborghini? Or a common color for a sports car in general?), that's why the government agency (FRA, DOT... whichever) mandated yellow.

Would you rather they had the white and red alternating "candy cane" striping similar to that of OTR (Over The Road) semi-trailers? At least the yellow has a touch of class to it.

Doesn't CP use the candy striping? It goes better with their red paint, although it could work with the CN scheme, along the short hood anyway.

The yellow stripe ruined the BCR units.... I could see them fine at night they only have 6 light on the front

The GEVO's have white stripe

All the white should be replaced with yellow so our friends way up north can see & hear what an Illinois Bumble Bee looks & sounds like... During the summer when they roll past my house they sound like a Bee hive with all three of the cooling fans turning....

They can have yellow or White stripes. Most are going with yellow, the only exception's I can think of in the Class 1's are CP and NS. Those are the only two colors allowed. UP pleaded to have the color red added, but they said no, hence the yellow on the UP.

The IC units are getting the yellow stripe likely because CN has used yellow frame stripes for decades. After all, CN does own IC and they probably don't want to buy white reflective tape to bring the IC units up to FRA standards since they already have the yellow in stock. Cheap, cheap!
