What are the similarites and differences of the MP36PH-3C and MP36PH-3S? Are these locomotives Caterpillar powered? Which locomotive does MPI use for the frame and trucks? Would Motive Power Industries build 6 axle 4,000 horsepower freight versions on SD50 or SD40-2 frames if asked?

The main difference between the two locomotives is that the -3S has a static HEP plant (a HEP alternator driven off the front of the prime mover), and the -3C has a Caterpillar gen set HEP plant. Also, the fuel tank on the -3C is smaller, and the -3C uses some remanufactured components (like truck frames, cooling fans, traction alternators), while the Metra -3S was built with all new components.

The frame is a proprietary MPI design, built brand new - not a remanufactured frame.

MPI would probably engineer and build anything that is practical, providing they have a Purchase Order.

Why would anyone want to do that for though? And I doubt anyone can answer that, MPI would have to research it and make a decision if someone decided for some reason they wanted their locomotive built on a 30 year old frame. For enough money, you probably could even put it on a SD9 frame, but who would want to do that?

Thanks for the info tominboise. I thought MPI reused a frame instead of making a new one.

According to comments on Metra forum, MP36PH-3S are not that bad..

I dunno, you might want to check back on the Metra forum. The only guy there whos opinion is actually "true" is bones, and that's because he's a Metra engineer. He doesn't like the new engines, for a variety of reasons. The MP36s seem to be unreliable, too. If there's a train delayed due to engine trouble on the Metra system, more than likely there's an MP36 on the point. That's something even a casual rider can figure out.
