On Monday, Metro announced that for the third straight year, it will shut down stations for major platform work and two of the station shutdowns are scheduled to start in just a few months.

From mid-February to May of next year, Metro plans to shut down the Arlington Cemetery and Addison Road stations.

Although Silver Line trains will continue to pass through Addison Road by single-tracking through the station, Metro says Blue Line trains will not pass through Arlington Cemetery. That will cut off direct access between the Pentagon and Rosslyn stations, forcing riders to go through D.C. and transfer to get from one to the other.

Then in the summer of 2021, Metro plans to close three Green/Yellow line stations in Prince George’s County – Greenbelt, College Park, Prince George’s Plaza, and West Hyattsville. Metro had originally planned to shut down those stations this past summer.

In the summer of 2022, Metro plans to close the Cheverly, Landover, and New Carrollton stations. Minnesota Avenue and Deanwood are also expected to close, but unlike all the other stations, it won’t be for major platform work. Instead, Metro says it is because they are on the same segment of the Orange Line as the other stations that need to close, and trains going to those two stations would have nowhere to turn around thanks to the tracks being closed further to the east.

Metro says stations will be renovated while they are closed. If all goes according to schedule, the 2022 closures will be the last stations that need to shut down for major platform work in the near future.

Deanwood and Minnesota Avenue had their platform rehabilitations done under the nights and weekend schema before WMATA decided to go to the total shutdown schema. The length of time it took to do the project is the primary reason why WMATA went to total shutdowns on future rehabilitation projects.

Curious about Rockville.

Will the new canopy be a replica of the old one, or will they use a more modern design?

From 08 24 2005: Rockville Station Access Improvement Study (19.7 MB PDF file) Looks like it will be something different. I wouldn't describe the canopies at National Airport, NoMa - Gallaudet and Eastern Blue line extension stations as a more modern design. They are nothing more then sheet metal and structural steel variants of the concrete gull wing canopy.

They'll probably do a local/express shuttle service between Pentagon and Rosslyn.

Ft. Totten to Greenbelt, with an extentsion of the B30 to Ft. Totten. Possible MARC "shuttle" but then CSX has to play nice (real nice would be a flyover between F TOWER and RIVERDALE so trains can cross over w/o disrupting MARC service).

And here we have the MARC "shuttle" to Union.... and I think we discussed a similar shuttle in threads past.

I doubt there will be a Pentagon-Rosslyn shuttle.

The track layout basically makes that impossible to do if you want to run any sort of reasonable level of service through either of those stations. (TBH probably the biggest design flaw with the system)

Metro outlines next phases of platform reconstruction, additional capital projects in 2021 and beyond

WMATA has simply announced their schedule of upcoming projects that will require closures. Expect information on workarounds using buses ahead of each closures.
