Loring AFB, ME, a former Strategic Air Command base, closed in the early 1990s during the post-Cold War drawdown. The base had one of the last Baldwins on any military roster, USAF 1863, an S12 built in 1952. A picture of it can be found here:

Some years ago there was mention in Railpace magazine of the locomotive still sitting in the ex-base's enginehouse. A recent look at the base using Google Earth shows that the tracks appear to have been lifted. Can anyone in this forum comment on the status of the base tracks and whether the locomotive remains at Loring? If the track has been scrapped, I would imagine the locomotive probably was as well.

From someone in the region I received this observation: "The line is abandoned from Caribou to Limestone but still in place.  It has been a number of years since its last use.  There have been some thoughts at times that the old base could be used needing rail but nothing has come about so far."
