It depends, there are some engines that were assigned renumbers in 1995 and still yet to be renumbered (like the CNW Dash 9s), and then a lot of UP engines still to be relettered as UPY units.

AmtrakFan, this SD40T-2 has been renumbered Union Pacific 8594, but it has no patch. http://www.angelfire.com/mb2/socalrailfan/DRGW5401.html
There are other locomotives in the same situation on the Union Pacific.

In the case of a lot of Southern Pacific units they're patched.
