The weirdest dual-power locomotive ever (IMHO) was an electric fired steam locomotive. Yes! You read that correctly! It was during WWII, and they had plenty of hydro power, but insufficient access to coal. They were mostlly electric, but had a few coal switchers. They powered them by boiling the water with electricity.

I found it on the Loco Locos site: http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/L ... coloco.htm Specifically this one: http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/L ... isselc.htm

Wow, that's pretty neat. When I read the title I thought it was referring to a traditional steam locomotive with an electric (battery?) powered automatic firing system. Turns out it was a lot stranger, never thought I'd see a steam locomotive with a pantograph (or an external-combustion electric locomotive, depending on how you look at it).
