Since advertising seems to be part of this topic, presently Amtrak is airing ten second TV spots in the Chicago market. The tagline is "just an Amtrak away". About three seconds are clips of trains, the remaining seven "happy people".

In how many other markets they air, I know not.

Well, at present it's ten seconds of TV advertising no airline is presently matching.

One of the quickest and easiest things Amtrak can do is settle on one paint scheme. The Viewliners look good in Phase III. Even the semi-ugly P32/40/42 look good in Phase III:

Meanwhile over in Europe where trains are more routine and common...

Are we really going to worry about insignificant minor details, much like a certain former President was more concerned about the paint job of a Boeing 747 that he would never fly on? Or focus more on things like reliability, service quality, frequency, and attracting ridership? The riders don't give a damn what the hell is on the front of the train, all they care about is that it works and runs on schedule. Provide a useful service; don't put lipstick on a pig...

I would disagree that the appearance of the train is immaterial. Is it the MOST important thing? No. But go onto any good NIMBY argument and you'll see people attacking "dirty, ugly trains" running through their neighborhoods attacking their children. Plus, politicians, the people that have to be convinced to shell out billions of dollars for the trains we want, like shiny things that look good in photo ops. Shallow? Maybe, but that's how the world works currently.
