As I understand it, Bethlehem Steel was the LVRR's largest customer. What impact did the closing of the plant have on NS in 1995? Did they loose a sh*t load of carloadings?

Bethlehem Steel had been downsizing for years before dying. Not a lot of business was lost when Bethlehem Steel closed, but business was being eliminated as the end approached.

Well, one thing I remember is that the Reading Bethleham branch was to be reactivated and used for shipping coke, until the closing of that operation much ended that idea. We have discussed this before more fully on the forum, but how long ago I don't remember

Conrail lost a good bit of traffic. Coal, limestone, ore and other materials going in, and finished goods coming out. The current traffic of stack trains and a little general freight is a lot less than there used to be. The number of crews the PBNE had dropped off very quickly as well, impacting railroaders negatively. It also meant Conrail needed less guys to work out of Allentown and other locations.

Didn't CR build an intermodel yard somewhere on the BS property? I could never figure out where it is or the size.

I know when BS closed the Saucon yard, which was always full of hopper cars was ripped out and replaced with condos.

The intermodal yard which is served by the PBNE is built where the Coke Works used to be.
