I came across this rule in a time table from Conrail that just states that only GP38's can't be used on this one secondary in my area but allows all outhers to be used. What kind of track condtions would ban the use of only GP38 from being used on a strech of Railroad but not ban the use of everyouther locomotives? Any ideas or reasons?

What area are you referring to?

I believe CR had a fleet of locos with notches cut out of the plows so they could clear the 3rd rail in Metro North and LIRR territory.

IIRC they had an orange or yellow line painted on the plow to show they were different

Also, in area where there are cab signals, the lead loco needs to have cab signals equipment installed on it adn operational. If its in the NJ area, CR frequently had GP38's equipped with cab signals.

The loaction in question is the Auburn secondary line in Central New York State. Its like any back off the beaten path line that strayes off the main line in Syracuse, NY and travels from small town to town then links to Geneva, NY and the Corning Secondary which gos North and South from Lyons, NY to Gang Mills, NY in the southern tier. What seem to be the question is that all units are allowed to travel this line but GP38's are the only ones band from operation on the line. Theres no signals, No special switches, or anything out of the ordanary about the line. That I know of.

I am not too familar with specs of Conrail motors but could it be that they were ballasted so their weight could be an issue?

When was was this?I can remember gp38's on each end with freight cars in the middle heading towards Martisco(now any trains traveling towards Auburn and coming from Solvay was quite rare)maybe weight restrictions? Here is a shot I posted on another forum.Taken in Solvay. http://tinyurl.com/fn5hy

This was something that I came across in a Conrail Northeast Timetable that covered only New York State. Suposidley this restricted part was waved by Finger Lakes but I would have my thought that this would apply to former Conrail GP38's? but the rules just state Model GP38 Prohibited makes no mention about outher railroads and there GP38's.

Like I said I used to see them on the Aurburn branch on the Syracuse side.Mostly GP38's or GP15-1.

I wonder why they could not go past Syracuse all the way to Geneva?

No traffic from Camillus to Auburn. They still had the Geneva connection.
