Hi, I am a brand new member and correct me if I post in the incorrect area.
I was born and raised in Waverly and left in 1950 to live in Florida. After all these years and at my age... I have decided I would like to build a "G scale" version of Waverly and need track layouts from around 1945 up to the time Route 17 messed things up.
I really like the steam locomotives and used to hang around the Fulton Street station on weekends just to see trains arrive and depart.

Any pictures of Waverly and the surrounding area from that time period would be greatly appreciated as most of the pictures I took as a kid were lost in a hurricane.

I am going to try to recreate the area from the bridge over the Chemung river, below O'Briens, and along Broad street including the Murry & Sons coal building to start with. Eventually I would like to expand my layout to include the Sayre yards.
I would like to start on the Fulton street station, Broad street buildings, and the tracks along Broad Street... and expand from there.

Thanks in advance for any and all help...

Anne........ yep, a girl that likes trains !!

Welcome Aboard, Anne!

While I don't have anything in my collections to help in your particular needs, there are many
folks on here that can probably point you in the proper direction. Glad to have you on here and
good luck on the layout! :-)

Here is an interesting link, shows what is left today with a few older photos although this is more related to the DL&W rather than the ERIE.

http://www.trainweb.org/gggrs/DLW_south_waverly.html

There are a few books published by Morning Sun (google it) that are focused on the DL&W (Lackawanna Facilities, DL&W Vols 1-3) and some ERIE and EL. I think there was also one on Trackside Sayre / Waverly that might give you some of the detail and photos you desire.

Good luck with such a neat project.

Hello Anne,
Welcome to the forum! yes, you picked a fine place to post your question..
(The New York Forum might be better..this this one is fine too)

I was born and raised in Waverly and left in 1994 to live in Rochester, NY! ;)
(I still visit Waverly all the time though, my Mom and sister are still there, and im only 2 hours away)

In addition to my link that Jack posted above, I have more links about Valley Railroad history here:
http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/Scottychaos/

and especially here:
http://www.frontiernet.net/~scottychaos ... tours.html

And..several years back on this forum we had a discussion about Waverly, and someone asked for a 1950's trackplan..So I drew one up!

The huge map of the Erie and DL&W in Waverly, 1955:
http://gold.mylargescale.com/Scottychao ... Biggif.gif

(let me know if you would like a smaller version of that one, I can re-size it if its unmanageable at that large size..
or you can copy it to your computer if you like, and change it yourself, if you know how..let me know if I can help..)

The "mouseover map" comparing then and now:

And a slideshow of maps of Valley railroad history,
that are intended to go with another webpage about Valley railroad history, not yet complete:

and..you might enjoy this group, I love it! :)

From the back of Broad street business district, looking south.
Houses on other side of the tracks are on Erie street, the building on the far right is near Fulton street crossing:

Someday I plan to kitbash an Erie Berkshire in G-gauge (1/29 scale)..
No suitable model (for a starting point) currently exists though:

Cant forget about the Lackawanna! ;)

Thanks Scott,
You have some great photos that I did not have.
Brought back memories.. IE... I had to take my brother to the barber shop located in the building behind the Erie station.
The entrance was about the middle of the building on Fulton street.. I "think" the building used to be the Wagner hotel, but the picture says Snyder.

Anne,
it was the Wagner *and* the Snyder! ;)
different names at different times, but the same building.
People always refer to as one or the other, I have seen both names in about equal use over the years.

It was first the Snyder, then later the Wagner..
It was built as the Snyder Hotel in the 1850's, it said "Snyder" across the top until the end of its days..
It was torn down in 2007, it was over 150 years old..
